This month’s issue celebrates the many facets of children’s nursing and its development, from the acute and community sectors to school nursing. Mark Whiting reminds us of the crucial role that nurses play, not just with children and young people themselves but with whole families, in an article on the help and support families need in the often overwhelming task of caring for a child with a disability and complex health needs. Many of his research findings on what families value in health professionals reflect attributes you will recognise – namely, ‘going the extra mile’, ‘working beyond the job description’, being available out of hours, providing emotional and

psychological support, and believing in and valuing parental instinct (page 24). In the spirit of involving children and young people in health care, Caroline Carter and Kate Brown describe a university project where service users took part in recruitment and selection, teaching and learning, and assessment of students. The project shows the benefits of involving young people in recruiting and selecting candidates. However, it also demonstrates the limitations of such well-intentioned initiatives, particularly the potentially damaging consequences to students of negative feedback, which needs careful management (page 28). We begin a new series this month looking at the public health challenges for patients and nurses in the four countries of the UK, starting with England, where public health services are in a state of flux after undergoing fundamental change (page 8). Finally, a reminder that, with the support of the RCN’s Research in Child Health community, we are once again offering a research award. Two awards of £750 each are on offer and more details are available in Noticeboard on page 10.
