Repairs to existing removable partial dentures may be complicated when the lost abutment is an isolated terminal tooth and the tooth-supported base must be converted into an extension base. When anticipated in the original framework design, this repair circumstance can yield good results. In the framework casting in Fig. 1, the orientation of the finish lines can be seen. The finish line on the patient’s left has been modified from its customary anterior-posterior orientation to a more vertical position. Fig. 2 shows the polished surface and Fig. 3 shows the tissue surface of the completed removable partial denture. If the upper left first molar (Fig. 1) is extracted in the future and the removable partial denture is otherwise serviceable, an acrylic resin repair can be done to convert the removable partial denture into an extension base prosthesis. In the example shown, the upper left canine should be clasped to serve as an appropriate abutment. Reprint
