A new editor for Europe

After many years of outstanding service, Professor Juan A. Tovar is stepping down as the Journal of Pediatric Surgery Editor for Europe. Juan has been a stalwart for the Journal handling submissions from the European continent and providing important input, keen insight, and sage advice to the editorial board. Juan filled his role as a recognized surgeon-scientist and academic leader in the field of pediatric surgery. Professor Tovar was born in Salamanca, Spain, June 30, 1944. He attended medical school at the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Salamanca from 1960 to 1966 graduating summa cum laude. He trained as a general surgery resident at the University of Valladolid from 1966 to 1968. He then spent two years (1968–1970) as a resident in pediatric surgery at the Hôpital Enfantes Malades in Paris under the supervision of Professors Févre and Pellerin. He obtained a PhD in 1970 at the University of Valladolid. He served as a pediatric surgery registrar and research fellow at the LaPaz Children's Hospital in Madrid from 1971 to 1976 under the supervision of Professor Julio Monereo. During that time span he spent 1974 in the US as a research fellow at the Children's Hospital of Los Angeles. Following training Juan was appointed Chief of Pediatric Surgery and Surgeon-in-Chief at the Aranzazu Hospital in San Sebastián, a post he held from 1977 to 1991. He was appointed Associate Professor of Pediatrics at the University of the Basque Country in 1980 and was promoted to full professor in 1984. In 1992 Dr. Tovar returned to Madrid as Chairman of the Department of Pediatric Surgery and Surgeon-inChief of the LaPaz University Children's Hospital. He was appointed Associate Professor of Pediatrics and Surgery at the Universidad Autonoma de Madrid in 1994 and promoted to full professor in 2005. He was named the Chairman of Pediatrics in 2008 and Vice-Director in 2009. He has had a very productive career both as a clinician and research scientist. Juan has published 236 scientific articles in international journals, 282 publications in domestic journals (Spanish language), and 97 book chapters. He has advanced expertise in a wide range of clinical conditions, including congenital anomalies affecting the foregut (esophagus and lung), congenital diaphragmatic hernia, and hepatobiliary disorders including liver transplantation. Based on his performance, productivity, and accomplishments, Professor Tovar was elected to membership in many scientific surgical societies and associations, including the Society of Pediatric Surgeons of Spain (serving as President 1996–1998), Societe Francaise de Chirurgie Pediatrique, British Association of Paediatric Surgeons, European Pediatric Surgical Association, Gastrointestinal Motility in Childhood group (founding member), Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of England (Hon.), Surgery Section–American Academy of Pediatrics (Hon.), Canadian Association of Paediatric Surgeons (Hon), as well as honorary membership in the Baltic, Indian, Egyptian, Australasian, Italian, Mexican, Austrian, Polish, and Dominican Pediatric http://dx.doi.org/10.1016/j.jpedsurg.2014.09.042 0022-3468/© 2014 Elsevier Inc. Surgical Associations, as well as pediatric surgical associations of Ecuador, Venezuela, Uruguay, and Peru. Juan was elected president of the Monospecialist Section of Pediatric Surgery of the European Union of Medical Specialists (1992–1996) and was President of the European Board of Pediatric Surgery from 1992 to 1996. Dr. Tovar is an experienced editor having served on the Editorial Board of the European Journal of Pediatric Surgery and Pediatric Surgery International. He has been associated with the Journal of Pediatric Surgery for many years as a valued member of the editorial board. His initial appointment was as an editorial consultant, and in 1992 he became an associate editor. He was appointed the editor for Europe in 2002 and has served in that important leadership capacity for the past 12 years. We sincerely thank Professor Tovar for his many contributions and outstanding work on the editorial board for which we are most appreciative. Juan Tovar is a gentleman and a scholar and a good friend and colleague. He is a good family man who has been married to his wife Annick (who he met in Paris when he was in training) for 46 years and the couple have a son and a daughter. Fortunately, he will remain on the board in the role of contributing editor providing his expertise in reviewing manuscripts and as an advisor to the editor (Fig. 1). The new editor for Europe is another highly qualified and well respected surgeon-scientist, Mikko P. Pakarinen, MD, PhD, of Helsinki, Finland (Fig. 2). Mikko was born on September 2, 1968. He attended medical school at the University of Helsinki obtaining his medical doctorate in 1995. He trained in general surgery for a year at a district hospital and two years at the Helsinki City Hospital (1996–1998) as a general surgery and gastroenterology resident. He obtained a PhD in 1998 in gastroenterology related work. Mikko trained as a specialist registrar in the Section of Pediatric Surgery at the Hospital for Children and Adolescents, University of Helsinki, from 2001 to 2004 and spent a year in experimental gastrointestinal surgery. He was also assigned as consultant pediatric surgeon at the Tammisaari District Hospital.

Dr. Pakarinen obtained further training as a specialist registrar in pediatric surgery at the Alder Hey Children's Hospital in Liverpool, UK from 2004 to 2005. Upon his return to Helsinki in 2006, he was appointed consultant surgeon in the Section of Transplantation and Liver Surgery at the Helsinki University Central Hospital. In 2007 Mikko was appointed Associate Professor of Pediatric Surgery at the Hospital for Children and Adolescents, University of Helsinki. He is the principal investigator for Pediatric Liver and Gut Research at the Children's Hospital. Mikko's areas of clinical expertise and other research interests include neonatal surgery, hepatobiliary disorders and liver transplantation, intestinal failure, and pediatric colorectal surgery. He has been quite productive and published 180 scientific articles, 27 book chapters, and has made 150 major Congress presentations. He is on the executive board of the European Union Medical Specialist Section on Pediatric Surgery. He was elected to membership in the

European Pediatric Surgical Association and the British Association of Paediatric Surgeons. Mikko is also on the executive board of the Finnish Association of Pediatric Surgeons, the Finnish Gastroenterology Association and is treasurer of the Finnish Association of Transplant Surgeons. He is a member of the Finnish Surgical Society and Finnish Gastrointestinal Tract Surgeons. Dr. Pakarinen has significant editorial experience being an associate editor for the European Journal of Pediatric Surgery and Editorial Consultant for Pediatric Surgery International, Scandinavian Journal of Surgery, and Finnish Medical Journal. He has been a valued reviewer for the Journal of Pediatric Surgery and 13 other journals. He was the editor of the European Journal of Pediatric Surgery Case Report Journal, a post he resigned to become the Editor for Europe for the Journal of Pediatric Surgery. Mikko is a very talented and knowledgeable pediatric surgeon with solid editorial skills. He is a mature and steady individual who is a good family man, happily married to his wife Laura (who is an infectious disease specialist physician), and the couple have 3 children. We are confident he will be an asset to the Journal of Pediatric Surgery and an honest, unbiased, responsible and ethical Editor. We enthusiastically welcome Mikko to the Journal of Pediatric Surgery as the new editor for Europe.
