But how are senior nurses in front line services to judge their appointments, and judge them as leaders? I was in Zurich, Switzerland, last month at the 2013 congress of the European Nurse Directors Association, where researcher in health management Andrea Cavicchioli spoke about how to evaluate leadership skills. He gave a brief history of ideas on leadership, from the ‘great man’ theory, through the traits, situational and leader-member exchange theories, to transformational leadership. NURSING MANAGEMENT

Leaders must ask themselves whether they have created a working environment in which people feel free and safe to tell the truth

Nick Lipley Editor @editorNM

of Applied Sciences and Arts of Southern Switzerland, Manno, argues that all of the eight theories he outlined offer us useful techniques to manage our everyday working lives. A leader may have aspects of any of the theories, giving tens of thousands of possibilities, so the professor suggests a handful of tests, which include whether a leader adapts to his or her organisation, develops staff, has relationships based on trust, and loves and serves others. Some of the important questions leaders must ask themselves and others is whether they have created a working environment in which people feel free and safe to tell the truth, and nurtured a culture in which staff can reinvent their organisation if necessary. As the UK prepares for a general election in 2015 and a referendum on Scottish independence next year, Professor Cavicchioli’s suggestions give us some points to consider in assessing how Mr Stevens and Mr Gray perform in challenging and uncertain times.
