ACG PRESIDENTIAL INTRODUCTION Stephen B. Hanauer, MD1 Am J Gastroenterol 2015; 110:4–5; doi:10.1038/ajg.2014.394

It is an honor and a privilege to introduce our President Harry Sarles and to provide some insights into his background and what lead to his outstanding presidency. Harry is a true Texan. His parents were Gene and Martha Sarles and he has two younger sisters, Deborah and Linda. Harry’s father was an academic nephrologist at the University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston and he passed away on 11 September 2000. He was nicknamed the “grand nephron” as he was the consultant to the consultants regarding kidney disease and medicine, in general. Gene was a pioneer in kidney dialysis and lymphocyte depletion for kidney transplantation. He developed anti-lymphocyte globulin in horses and rabbits and held many patents. He also developed the first free-standing privately owned dialysis center in Texas and subsequently gave it back to the University as a gift. His mother is still living in an assisted care facility in Austin near his youngest sister, Linda. Martha was a school teacher, home maker, and a radio talk show host of her own show, “Galveston Talking.” Harry was an Eagle Scout as a teenager and attended a leadership training camp in Philmont, NM. In high school he played tenor sax in the stage band “Taco Benders” in Galveston and was also a member of the marching and concert bands. He graduated from the University of Texas (Austin) in 3 years with high honors in 1975 and attended the medical school at UTMB in Galveston and was honored with AOA and the William Marr Award for Excellence in Medicine. He also completed his internship and residence at the UTMB. As a resident, while out for an afternoon run (he trained for and ran in the Galveston

Marathon) he performed CPR on a drowning victim who survived, becoming the first survival logged for the Galveston County Beach Patrol since its inception. He subsequently went to the Community College at night to become a Certified Reserve Peace Officer and joined the Galveston County Sheriff ’s department, working on search and rescue for the Parks Board and Beach Patrol on nights and weekends. He then moved to Phoenix for Fellowship with Robert Sanowski and Richard Kozarek. In Phoenix he met the “love of his life”, Kathy Kimball, at a happy hour bar on the second day of fellowship. His first practice was in a multi-specialty clinic in Harligen, TX, from 1984 to 1991. There he helped grow the clinic from 17 to 34 members and served as the Chief of Medicine at Valley Baptist Medical Center. Harry and Kathy’s daughter Jillian was born in 1987 in Harligen and remains the “pride and joy” in his (and Kathy’s) life. Jillian is now an NPC (non-physician clinician, PA) practicing in gastroenterology and will be practicing in Washington, DC. Of note, Jillian is an ACG member! Harry and Kathy moved to Dalas in 1991 to join North Texas Gastroenterology at a hospital-based group at Baylor University in Dallas. There, he worked on the liver transplant team and practiced consultative gastroenterology and was active in teaching GI fellows and Medicine residents. Harry became a founding member of the Digestive Health Associates of Texas in 1996. Their practice now has 82 members across the DFW Metroplex. They have multiple ASCs, infusion centers, a pathology lab, and anesthesia services. His private

practice migrated from downtown Baylor hospital out to Baylor Garland and is now in Rockwall, County Texas at Texas Health Presbyterian Rockwell Hospital. He served as Chief of Medicine and Chief of Staff for 2 years, and is now on the Board of Managers, the Governing Board and Medical Executive Committee, and Director of Special Procedures (monitoring patient satisfaction and physician performance) and has implemented GIQuIC. On weekends he runs an agribusiness, harvesting 150–200 acres of hay from his “WING-S Ranch”. He also manages two lakes and two ponds for various types of fishing. While he raised cattle in the past, he has chosen to focus on “making hay” for the time being. His recreational time is filled with fishing and golf with Kathy. He and Kathy also love traveling and spending time with family and friends hanging out at the WING-S Ranch located 1 h north of Dallas in Gainsville. The land has been in the Sarles family since 1876 and Sarles lake can be located on Google Maps. Harry began his societal involvement through the Texas Society of Gastroenterology and Endsocopy. He served as President from 1994 to 1996 and as Treasurer from 2004 to 2012 and remains on the Board of Councilors. He remains proud of the Texas society and of the ACG Governors serving on the Board of Councilors. The TSGE has an annual educational meeting in September with over 400 attendees and the Society remains politically active, including successful sponsorship of a mandated colorectal cancer screening benefit for Texans over the past 10 years. His accomplishments in our college are enormous, as he has represented the true

“grass roots” nature of the College. He Chaired the Practice Management Committee and was a former Practice Management Course Director. He was elected to the Board of Governors, and was course director of the Board of Governors Best Practices Course. He then was elected to become Vice Chair and Chair, where he re-organized the Governors by formalizing the Board of Governors Meeting and rearranging the election process. During

his term he initiated the every-other-year Washington Fly-In and has participated in many of the “fly-in” lobbying efforts. Before being elected to the Board of Trustees executive committee Harry served on the National Affairs, Patient Care, and Professional Issues Committees and developed the patient version of the “Smart Brief ” and served as editor for the first year. There has been no more passionate supporter of the College and its membership.

Indeed, supporting members and extolling and evolving member benefits has been Harry’s goal and to that end the institution of ACG Affinity program has been one of his many prides. Harry’s leadership and commitment to the College has been inspiring. His love and pride for Kathy and Jillian, their family ranch, and their vacation time together continue to provide a wonderful sense of balance to his extremely successful career.
