CONFERENCE REPORT Annual Conference of BMLA, and the First Meeting of the UK-PDPDT Interest Group, Manchester Museum of Science and Technology, 7—8 June, 2007 The first scientific meeting of the newly formed UKPDPDT Interest Group was held on the 7th of June, 2007, within the Annual Conference of the British Medical Laser Association with which it is affiliated.
The group aspires to associate those involved in the science, technology, clinical application and the industry of PD and PDT. The mission of the group is to advance applied science and to promote clinical expansion of PD and PDT for the benefit of patients. This first meeting was organised jointly by the BMLA and the Yorkshire Laser Centre (UK Medical Laser Centre), sponsored by Axcan Pharma, with a programme, which began with a guest lecture, followed by eight presentations on PD and PDT from across the UK. Dr. Bing Tan, the head and neck surgeon from the Netherlands Cancer Institute, who presented his personal experience and also reviewed the literature on Foscan PDT in head and neck cancer, delivered the guest lecture. Apart from PDPDT the 2 days BMLA conference was packed with presentations in parallel sessions which included: core knowledge teaching, science, technology and clinical aspects of different lasers, as well as lasers in dermatology. Two sessions were also devoted to Optical Coherence Tomography, organised by its interest group. This year, PDPDT Journal Prize for best presentation on PDT was awarded to Miss Gray MBChB, MRCS (Photo) from Department of gastro-intestinal surgery, Gartnaval Hospital Glasgow. The Conference was a great success, much to the credit of the overall organiser of the conference, Dr. Caroline Sudworth (Secretary of the BMLA). K.
