T
he Kyoto Cornea Club is a membership-based organization consisting of more than 100 active cornea researchers in Japan. Its members convene every year for a 2-day meeting of academic lectures, scientific discussions, and social exchanges. The current supplement issue of Cornea represents the proceedings of the 19th Annual Meeting of the Kyoto Cornea Club, which was held in November 2013. The lecturers were selected by voting among the members and were invited from countries in Asia and around the world, as well as from Japan. As shown in the current proceedings, every lecture was outstanding and greatly stimulated our members. Before acceptance for publication in this supplement, all papers were reviewed by members of the editorial boards of both the Kyoto Cornea Club and Cornea, Journal of The Cornea Society. As a guest lecturer, we invited Prof. Masayuki Amagai, from the Department of Dermatology, School of Medicine, Keio University, Tokyo, Japan. Prof. Amagai’s lecture on the 3 musketeers of the epidermal barrier and atopic diseases was very inspiring for us because ophthalmologists are also very interested in the mechanisms of action underlying diseases occurring in patients with atopic dermatitis. Another guest lecture was given by Prof. Friedrich Kruse, from the Department of Ophthalmology, University Hospital Erlangen, Erlangen, Germany. As an internationally renowned corneal surgeon and researcher, he gave a highly informative lecture on the recent evolution of corneal transplant surgery, especially that of posterior lamellar keratoplasty using thinner donor tissues. Our last president, Prof. Yoshitsugu Inoue, from the Division of Ophthalmology and Visual Science, Faculty of Medicine, Tottori University, Tottori, Japan, provided this year’s keynote lecture titled “A Review of Clinical and Basic Approaches to Corneal Endotheliitis.” He focused on the pathogenesis of herpes simplex virus and cytomegalovirus endophthalmitis, presenting some excellent in vitro data. At the Asian Session, 2 speakers were invited. Dr Kyung-Sun Na, from the Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Science, Seoul St Mary’s Hospital, College of Medicine, The Catholic University of Korea, Seoul, Korea, reported the identification of molecular biomarkers in Korean patients with dry eye disease. Dr Hong Kyun Kim, from the Kyungpook National University School of Medicine, Seoul, Korea, presented his group’s latest data on the development of a bioengineered cornea using a 3-dimensional bioprinting system. Their lectures provoked some very active discussions among our members. We were also impressed by the science presented in Symposia I and II. In Symposium II, cutting-edge technologies in the area of regenerative medicine for the cornea were presented by Dr Naoki Okumura from Doshisha University, Dr Yoshiyuki Satake from Tokyo Dental College, and Dr Yoshinori Oie from Osaka University. Their presentations illustrate the brilliant future for corneal research and practice in the coming years. This year, we welcome 5 new members who have qualified for membership. We look forward to their contributions to corneal research. Finally, we would like to express our gratitude to Mr Akira Kurokawa, President and CEO of Santen Pharmaceutical Co, Ltd, for the generous support and continuing commitment to the success of the Kyoto Cornea Club.
