Argyrophilic nucleolar organiser region counts and prognosis in pharyngeal carcinoma A. Pich', P. Pisani2, M. Kzengli2, N. Cappello3 & R. Navone' 'Department of Biomedical Sciences and Human Oncology and 3Department of Genetics, Biology and Medical Chemistry, University of Turin, Via Santena 7, 10126 Torino; 2Department of Radiotherapy and ORL, Ospedale Maggiore, Corso G. Mazzini 18, 28100 Novara, Italy. Summary The prognostic significance of argyrophilic nucleolar organiser regions (AgNORs) has been evaluated in biopsy specimens from 61 primary squamous and undifferentiated carcinomas of the pharynx prior to therapy. The univariate Kaplan-Meyer survival analysis showed a significant correlation between 3- and 5-year survival rates and the mean AgNOR number per tumour cell (P 59 30 52 50 F 10 69 Sex 59 0.16 M 51 49 42 Location 24 49 49 Oropharynx 18 77 52 0.22 Rhinopharynx 19 37 32 Hypopharynx G2 33 42 40 Histologic 0.37 52 G3 28 64 grade TI 10 50 40 T Stage T2 21 62 52 T3 18 55 50 0.203 T4 12 25 25 NO 32 52 55 N Stage NI 8 62 62 N2 2 50 0 0.73 19 N3 47 30 42 52.5 0.76 Lymphocytic + + + 40 + 21 infiltration 52.5 52.5 UCHL1 pos. > 70% 34 54 50 0.54 52 40 lymphocytes < 70% 27 MB2 pos. 64 > 10% 14 50 0.43 50 lymphocytes < 10% 47 45 LN2 pos. 52 > 10% 28 50 0.47 47 lymphocytes < 10% 33 42 HMFG2 pos. > 50% 35 45 40 0.29 carcinoma < 50% 26 62 52 cells
