Awards for outstanding contributions to animal welfare THE exceptional achievements of two animal welfare researchers were recognised by the Universities Federation for Animal Welfare (UFAW) at its conference in York recently. Mike Mendl, of the School of Veterinary Sciences at the University of Bristol, and David Fraser, of the University of British Columbia Animal Welfare Program, were announced as this year’s winners of the UFAW Medal for Outstanding Contributions to Animal Welfare Science. Each received a commemorative medal and £3000. Professor Mendl has worked on a wide range of species, including companion, farm and laboratory animals, and has published more than 100 peer-reviewed papers and 15 book chapters on both fundamental and applied research. UFAW describes him as ‘a pioneer in the study

of cognitive bias’. It notes that Professor Mendl’s first publication in this field had been highlighted by the Faculty of 1000 research panel as a ‘must read’, while his work on factors affecting aggression and tail-biting in pigs had also yielded knowledge of practical benefit to improving welfare. Professor Fraser’s work, UFAW says, has greatly influenced the quality and direction of research in applied ethology and animal welfare science for more than 40 years. He conducted some of the earliest research on the welfare problems of pigs, including individual housing of sows and early weaning of piglets. He also carried out pioneering work on the use of vocalisations to identify emotional states in animals, and studies of wildlife, including the causes and prevention of highway collisions. ‘His work is highly respected across disciplines
