AUSTRALIAN COLLEGE OF MIDWIVES INCORPORATED

EDITORIAL 1992 started on a busy note finalizing plans for the 3RD Asia Pacific Regional Pre-Conference Workshop and Conference.

On Wednesday March 25th a Regional Meeting was held for representatives from those m e m b e r associations present.

March 23rd came around too quickly but what an exciting time for the Australian College of Midwives when it hosted the 2 day Pre-Conference Workshop.

Then, the culmination of our plans - The 3RD Asia Pacific Regional Conference with the theme "Women and Midwives - forming a Network towards Safe Motherhood".

The College invited midwives from within the region to attend and discuss - "The Achievement of Safe M o t h e r h o o d Goals through Education". The specific challenge to the participants was to determine the changes required in basic, post-basic and continuing education of midwives to prepare them for changes in practice at all levels of the maternity service. The Australian International Development Assistance Bureau sponsored the attendance of 11 midwives from Western Samoa, Tonga, Fiji, Vanuatu, Papua New Guinea, Solomon Islands and Cambodia to the Workshop. The Asia Pacific Region of the International Confederation of Midwives sponsored 3 midwives from Nepal, Thailand and Cambodia. Also present were midwives from Indonesia, Hong Kong, Japan, New Zealand and Australia. The strategies and outcomes from these deliberations will be published and available to the profession. Whilst the Pre-Conference Workshop was underway the College hosted a Midwifery Education Workshop on March 24th for Australian midwives involved in the transfer of midwifery education into the tertiary sector - see report from Pauline Glover.

DIARY

Midwives and consumers from within the Region spoke on issues ranging from midwifery education and practice in their countries to consumer involvement and the outcomes of research studies. It certainly was an exciting time in Melbourne. The Executive of the College wish to thank those midwives w h o participated in making the week of activities a success, both professionally and socially. What will the remainder of the year bring? More educational activities I hope, the Midwifery Education Workshop was the catalyst and from there has emerged several suggestions for the future. We have also been informed that the College was successful in obtaining a grant to allow the establishment of Distance Learning Packages for midwives in rural areas. The College will certainly be active during the next twelve months from the implementation of these plans as well as preparing for the 23RD ICM Congress to be held in Vancouver 9-14 May 1993. The Journal will be the communicating link with members w h e n information o n these issues is available. Lorraine Wilson Editor.
