Ó CARS 2014

It is a great honor for me to host all of you as President of the 28th International Congress and Exhibition of Computer Assisted Radiology and Surgery, CARS 2014, at Fukuoka International Congress Center during June 25–28, 2014, with a joint meeting of the Asian Conference of Computer-Aided Surgery (ACCAS) which is also held at the same venue during June 24 and 25. On behalf of the members of the Japan Society of Computer Aided Surgery (JSCAS) and Japan Institute of Computer Assisted Radiology and Surgery (JICARS), I would like to extend my sincere appreciation to all the Congress Organizing Committee members and CARS 2014 Program Committee members for their contribution to the activities of CARS, as well as all the participants coming from all over the world. CARS 2014 would not have been possible without your assistance. I look forward to welcoming you to Fukuoka. Fukuoka is the largest city in Kyushu and one of the 10 most populated cities in Japan. It was chosen recently by Newsweek

as one of the world’s 10 ‘‘hottest’’ cities along with places such as Las Vegas, Munich and London. Given its geographic and historical proximity to the Asian continent, it has been called ‘‘the Gateway to Asia’’. I wish you an enjoyable stay in Fukuoka as well as the meeting of CARS 2014. The main theme of CARS 2014 is ‘‘Life Innovation’’. Thanks to outstanding supervision and leadership of Heinz Lemke, a professor in computer science at the Technical University of Berlin, CARS was founded in 1985 with the aim of establishing a consortium for innovation in a new frontier of discipline of computer-assisted radiology and surgery. It is a unique multidisciplinary meeting that brings together physicists, engineers, industrial researchers and clinicians, including radiologists and almost all types of surgeons, from 43 countries worldwide. Emerging and important issues are discussed by specialists in those scientific fields of Computer-Assisted Radiology (CAR), International Society for Computer Aided Surgery (ISCAS), Computer-Aided Diagnosis (CAD), Computed Maxillofacial Imaging (CMI), European Association for Predictive, Preventive and Personalized Medicine (EPMA), Society of Photo-Optical Instrumentation Engineers (SPIE), Picture Archiving and Communication Systems (PACS), and imaging informatics. The number of participants is increasing year by year with newcomers from the International Conference on Information Processing in Computer Assisted Interventions (IPCAI), and ACCAS at the past few congresses. This is the only meeting in the world that brings these different specialists together and provides a bridge between their various disciplines. The venue for the CARS meeting has changed annually between Europe, Asia and the USA, but many of us have participated in the meetings to keep up to date with new

technology and to resolve the daily problems of introducing it into clinical practice. The multidisciplinary meeting is well suited to resolving the emerging problems in society. These problems are complicated and it is becoming harder to find solutions using conventional strategies or by one particular society on its own. There is an extraordinary tendency of increase in medical requirements on technical difficulties which are caused by introducing the minimally invasive treatment such as endoscopic surgery or interventional radiology, and also by scientific requirements in more complete understanding of pathophysiology or dynamic pathology in human diseases. The outcome which is produced by a financial support of the grant from government or donation from industry is required to be reduced to public health care management of the society. In response to these economic and social changes in society, the scope of the CARS meeting has clearly shifted from technology-driven research to more clinically oriented papers discussing developments and innovations in collaboration with multidisciplinary expert groups. The opening ceremony will be held on the 5th floor on Wednesday, June 25. The opening keynote lecturers are world-famous distinguished professors who are leaders in their respective fields: Professor Hiroaki Shimokawa, Tohoku University; Professor Hideo Utsumi, Kyushu University; and Professor Hubertus Feussner, Klinikum rechts der Isar, Technical University, Munich. They are the person who have successfully accomplished fusion of multidisciplinary fields and have created a new frontier of biomedical engineering science worldwide.

How to encourage and develop the young investigators of the next generation is also a key issue at the CARS meeting. I personally recommend young investigators to participate to the CARS Clinical Day Workshop on liver cancer, tutorial sessions, and educational lectures in ACCAS on June 25. All presenters in poster sessions are required to make a short oral presentation outlining their work within 3 min using fewer than three slides. A network meeting time and place for young investigators is included for the first time in the last session on Thursday, June 26. These will encourage mutual understanding and exchange of information among researchers from different countries. A new ISCAS Kikuchi Frugal Technology Award will be presented this year. The other two awards, the best paper award by Olympus and the scholarship award by Koh Young are also generously continued. These awards are expected to stimulate and encourage young investigators. There will be a Japanese tea ceremony (‘‘Sado’’) on three occasions on the 4th floor at Fukuoka International Congress Center on Thursday, June 26. The objective of Sado is to create a relaxed atmosphere for communication between the hosts and guests. All attendees of CARS 2014 are invited and welcome to participate in the ISCAS cruise party on Friday. The ship departure time is 7:00 pm on June 27. I wish you all well for your participation in CARS 2014 and I look forward to seeing you in Fukuoka. Makoto Hashizume, MD, PhD, FACS President of CARS 2014 Fukuoka, June 2014
