Hernia,

50 years of age, was admitted into the dispensary on the evening of 23rd June last with strangulated (right) inguinal hernia. The history he gave was as follows :?That for more than 2 years he had been suffering from hernia for which he U6ed to put on a truss. This time too, about 12 hours before he came into the hospital, and nearly 48 hours after the descent of the guts, he had recourse to the same treatment, but unfortunately it was not attended with the desired effect, and towards evening the symptoms became more serious?he vomited once and hiccup supervened. On admission I tried at first taxis without putting him under chloroform, but could not reduce the hernia ; then chloroform was administered; when he was thoroughly under its influence and before the usual operation of herniotomy was performed, taxis was once more tried, but it was of no avail. The operation was performed nearly 60 hours after the descent of the guts; the stricture was found in

the neck of the sack. Immediately after the reduction of the hernia the man passed a copious watery and very offensive stool. The wound was dressed with a piece of lint soaked in carbolic acid lotion and over it a thick layer of cotton wool soaked in carbolic acid oil; lastly a pad was put
