Editorial Chemical Reviews provides comprehensive, authoritative, and accessible reviews of important research topics in all areas of chemistry. While many other journals publish concise reviews focused on a single author’s work, this journal fills a unique niche with reviews that are both comprehensive and critical. Such reviews are crucial for placing current work in the historical context of the field, clarifying connections among the contributions from different research groups, and explaining the significance of a specialized area to a broader audience. These reviews also play a significant educational role for early career scientists and researchers entering new fields. Over the past three decades, Chemical Reviews has been highly successful under the leadership of Professor Josef Michl. This great success is based on the strategic selection of highly relevant topics and choices of authors who are able to write accessible and balanced reviews, as well as careful editing and peer review of submissions. Thematic issues that focus on a single theme or research area have been particularly effective in encouraging top experts to write the reviews and in providing a valuable resource to the collective community. Perennial Reviews have allowed authors to update their reviews in this journal as the field evolves. Over the years, Chemical Reviews has become an essential resource to the field of chemistry, and the entire community is greatly indebted to Josef for his dedicated stewardship. I am honored to serve as Josef’s successor as the Editor of Chemical Reviews. My goal is to retain the comprehensive and accessible nature of the review articles in this journal while further enhancing its scope and impact. Many of the emerging areas of chemistry are multidisciplinary and push the conventional boundaries in areas such as biomedical, materials, environmental, polymer, and energy research. Over the next several years, the scope and content of this journal will be expanded to cover multidisciplinary and emerging areas, while maintaining and solidifying the core areas of chemistry. In addition, several new initiatives will be introduced to raise the visibility and educational impact of the journal. These efforts will ensure that Chemical Reviews retains its stellar reputation as the premiere journal for comprehensive reviews while strengthening and expanding its scholarly influence throughout the chemistry community and beyond. I am fortunate to be working with an outstanding team of Associate Editors and editorial support personnel. Over the next few months, we will be implementing several formatting and procedural changes that are described in the Author Guidelines, http://pubs.acs.org/page/chreay/submission/ authors.html. Moreover, we are planning an exciting schedule of Thematic Issues that will cover both emerging and core areas of chemistry. In addition to Thematic Issues and invited individual articles, the journal will continue to consider proposals for articles from the general community, following the process described in the Author Guidelines. Given the enormous growth and vibrancy of our field, a venue for comprehensive and accessible review articles is now more important than ever. I look forward to engaging with the © 2015 American Chemical Society

chemistry community to continue the proud tradition of Chemical Reviews in fulfilling this critical role.
