HKOUCH TtiE GENEROSITY oFan anonymous donor, a unique collection of psychoanalytic books and articles has been assembled in the Central Office of The American Psychoanalytic Association. The collection consists of first editions of virtually all of the analytic writings of Sigmund Freud and a number of significant selected works by other pioneers in psychoanalysis. It also contains many of Freud’s early preanalytic writings. These valuable works were donated to the Journal of the American Psychoanalytic Association and are dedicated to the pursuit of psychoanalytic scholarship. The Editor of the Journal was designated Curator of the collection, which was assigned in perpetuity to The American Psychoanalytic Association. The President of The Association appointed the Committee on Psychoanalytic Classics to arrange, with the approval of the Curator, the proper housing and cataloging of .the materials and the supervision of their usage. It is hoped that the generous example of the donor will stimulate others to contribute worthy additions to theJournaf collection and to The American Psychoanalytic Association. Every scientific discipline has particular mementoes marking historical developments. Museums exhibit ancient telescopes, microscopes, stethoscopes, and even the first computer. For psychoanalysis, there are no comparable instruments, since the only analytic instrument is the mind of the analyst. The historical landmarks, however, are the pubIications in which Freud and his followers made their seminal ideas known to the world. The texts in this collection provide the opportunity for analysts, historians, and other scholars to study the original sources of analytic concepts-to see how the ideas were first formulated and later modified, developed, and extended. In these volumes one finds, for example, the exposition of such fundamental analytic concepts as the Unconscious, the interpretation of dreams, infantile sexuality, the Oedipus complex, narcissism, the functions of the ego and superego, and the pervasive role of psychic conflict in neurosis and everyday life. One can examine the precursor of the analytic procedure in the cathartic technique, from which developed the later versions of the analytic method, so fruitful in its investigative and therapeutic capacities. Concomitantly, one can trace the gradual accumulation of a body of knowledge and evolution of theory, which today yield the most comprehensive picture of mental functioning that we have available. Beyond the implications for the relief of human suffering, one can recognize the influence of analytic ideas on art, literature, linguistics, anthropology, and historiography. Indeed, those ideas have profoundly influenced twentieth-century man’s concept of himself. The collection is accessible to all members of the International Psycho-Analytical Association, the American Psychoanalytic Association, and its affiliated societies and institutes. Every scientific discipline has particular mementoes marking historical developments. Museums exhibit ancient telescopes, microscopes, stethoscopes, and even the first computer. For psychoanalysis, there are no comparable instruments, since the only analytic instrument is the mind of the analyst. The historical landmarks, however, are the pubIications in which Freud and his followers made their seminal ideas known to the world. The texts in this collection provide the opportunity for analysts, historians, and other scholars to study the original sources of analytic concepts-to see how the ideas were first formulated and later modified, developed, and extended. In these volumes one finds, for example, the exposition of such fundamental analytic concepts as the Unconscious, the interpretation of dreams, infantile sexuality, the Oedipus complex, narcissism, the functions of the ego and superego, and the pervasive role of psychic conflict in neurosis and everyday life. One can examine the precursor of the analytic procedure in the cathartic technique, from which developed the later versions of the analytic method, so fruitful in its investigative and therapeutic capacities. Concomitantly, one can trace the gradual accumulation of a body of knowledge and evolution of theory, which today yield the most comprehensive picture of mental functioning that we have available. Beyond the implications for the relief of human suffering, one can recognize the influence of analytic ideas on art, literature, linguistics, anthropology, and historiography. Indeed, those ideas have profoundly influenced twentieth-century man’s concept of himself. The collection is accessible to all members of the International Psycho-Analytical Association, the American Psychoanalytic Association, and its affiliated societies and institutes.
