University of Tennessee, Memphis, College of Dentistry, Memphis, Tenn. The rotational path of insertion provides an alternative to conventional methods for obtaining retention of removable partial dentures.l Often an anterior-posterior rotation may be used to enhance a patient’s appearance by eliminating clasps on the maxillary anterior teeth. The use of this concept may sometimes be precluded because of unfavorable proximal surface tooth contours for the rigid retainers (Fig. 1). Techniques have been reported for preparation of lingual

TECHNIQUE
1. With a rubber dam, isolate the tooth having an unfavorable contour. 2. Acid-etch the gingival two thirds of the enamel surface to be recontoured. 3. Place sufficient light-cured composite resin to obtain desired contours and then cure. 4. Remove the rubber dam and make additional preparations as required (Fig. 2).

The contours can be reevaluated before proceeding by making an irreversible hydrocolloid impression and pouring a cast in quick-setting stone (Fig. 3). Additional contouring may easily be obtained by repeating steps 1 and 3. In the event that the restoration becomes worn, it may be replaced by carefully seating the removable partial denture over more composite resin, light-curing 20 seconds with the removable partial denture in place, and then finishing the cure after removal of the prosthesis.
