CONFERENCE Conference Report on the 11th World Congress of the International Photodynamic Association (IPA), Shanghai, March 28th—31st, 2007 The organisers of the International Photodynamic Association (IPA) 11th World Congress in Shanghai have cause to be proud for attracting more than 300 delegates from over 35 countries worldwide to the Congress. Having, myself, been present at a fair proportion of the previous IPA Congress’ I can vouch for the fact that our Chinese hosts provided an outstanding level of hospitality and organisational expertise. One could not help but notice, from arrival in the country, how friendly and welcoming everyone was, including, I might say, the immigration personnel! This is the first country I have entered with no queue at immigration control (and I have been to a great many countries in both East and West). I was fortunate in being collected from the airport by Dr. Qian Xiang of the Shanghai Skin Diseases and STD Hospital, who guided me to my first stop, which was a pre-Congress mini symposium organised by Professor Xiuli Wang of the Skin Hospital and Professor Guoyu Zhou of the Shanghai 9th

Hospital. The PDT symposium at the Skin Hospital was an opportunity for a small number of visitors to share their experience via short presentations in the company of some eminent Chinese PDT specialists, such as Professor Deyu Xu, Professor Guoyu Zhou, Professor Wenhui Chen, Professor Xiuli Wang (Fig. 1) and Dr. Zheng Huang. The mainlandTaiwan PDT symposium at the 9th Hospital was also a historic moment. It was the first meeting between the mainland and Taiwan PDT Collaboration Alliance led by Professor Ivy Yih-Chih Hsu of the Industrial Technology Research Institute. The opening ceremony began with the traditional Chinese Lion Dance to bring good luck to the conference (Figs. 2 and 3). This was followed by plenary sessions. The scientific programme encompassed guest lectures, plenary sessions and parallel sessions on the various components of PDT covering such subjects as photodetection, photosensitisers, light sources and dosimetry, and clinical applications. The balance between science and clinical was reasonably well weighted throughout the Congress and the overall standard of presentation was sufficiently high to enable everyone to become au fait with the current state of PDT.

The social programme offered a chance to renew acquaintances and acquire new friends whilst sampling the Chinese cuisine in an atmosphere which gave a taste of Eastern interest and culture. Throughout the conference the Elsevier booth remained a hive of activity and served to highlight the growing name of PDPDT. Over 100 current issues of the Journal were distributed in one afternoon. On the last day the organisers gave me the opportunity to announce within the closing ceremony the formation of the European Platform for Photodynamic Medicine (EPPM). For this, I extend my grateful thanks to the organisers.

On a final personal note, I would like to express my admiration for the manner in which Professor Jing Zhu, Congress President, gave her opening and closing addresses in English. K.
