promote exchange between researchers of different nationalities. One such event is the Brazilian Congress of Toxicology. This conference is the largest event in toxicology in Latin America and has occurred every 2 years since 1976. Since the first editions, the Congress of Toxicology has increased substantially, following the development of toxicology in the world. The 17th edition, held in the city of Ribeirão Preto, São Paulo, Brazil, in June 2011, was attended by about 900 participants, and more than 500 abstracts were presented in oral form or as posters. Of the 500 abstracts, 35 were previously selected by a scientific committee and the authors were invited to send the full version of their article for consideration for publication in the Journal of Toxicology and Environmental Health. Altogether, 15 papers were accepted for publication and make up this special edition. On behalf of all scientists in toxicology and environmental health in Brazil and the participants in this congress, we express our sincere gratitude to Professor Sam Kacew, who promoted the publication of this issue dedicated to research on toxicology in Brazil.

The healthy environment is a major determinant of individual and collective health, while unhealthy environments can lead to illness, physical disability, psychological harm, and even death. Often, the presence of toxic agents and their concentrations in the environment, food, and workplace are constantly subject to regulations to minimize impacts to human health. Toxicology is defined as the science that studies the adverse effects of chemicals on living organisms. This discipline has as its priority objectives the prevention of poisoning and risk assessment at the time of exposure. In addition, diagnosis and treatment of poisoning are also objects of study of this area of science. It is currently an area of research among the world’s fastest growing, due to the steep rise in the number and/or quantity of pollutants introduced or spread through the environment from anthropogenic sources. However, this is still a research area where the South American continent contributes negligibly. Thus, scientific events in toxicology are extremely important and necessary, especially in developing countries, to disseminate knowledge and to
