Cystic hamartoma of the posterior mediastinum

Routine investigations for muscular dystrophy (Becker’s disease) in a 17-year-old female unveiled a cystic lesion of the posterior mediastinum (Figure 1). At operation via a standard right posterolateral thoracotomy, a cystic tumor of 4.5 cm in diameter was encountered between the esophagus and the trachea and removed (Figure 2a, 2b). Histology revealed a cystic hamartoma (Figure 2c). The patient remained well with no signs of recurrence 3 years later. Hamartomas of the lung are rare, and as yet there are

no published reports of a mediastinal location. Muscular dystrophy has been associated with various tumors, and certain molecular mechanisms thought to be of importance in determining the classic myotonic dystrophy phenotype have been shown to have links to previously described oncogenic pathways.
