Improving outcomes in dementia care

November 25, London Next steps for commissioning, integrating and delivering effective dementia care, and progress and priorities for meeting the aims of the Dementia Challenge. With the Care Act having received royal assent and the Better Care Fund being implemented for 2015/16, sessions will focus on challenges for funding and working across budgets. Attendees will also discuss the development of clinical trials and innovative treatments, in the light of the prime minister’s pledge for more UK research on drugs and treatment to slow down the onset of dementia or even find a cure by 2025. Patients’ health literacy A report from the Royal College of General Practitioners highlights that many patients in primary and secondary care settings may not have the assumed levels of healthcare literacy that empower them to manage their conditions, and makes recommendations to address this. Health literacy is needed for patients and the public to understand and act on health information, to become partners in co-producing health, and to take control of their health to help shape environments and services for themselves, their families and their communities. Paying registration fees Older people’s nurses have until October 3 to respond to a consultation on rule changes that would enable them to pay their Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) registration fees in instalments. Patients with diabetes who have a foot ulcer will receive an electrocardiogram to check for heart problems, as part of a pilot study. The trial, which will take place in a number of English trusts, has been set up by NHS Improving Quality. Around half of people who develop a foot ulcer die within five years and many of these deaths are attributable to heart problems.

Award The Queen’s Nursing Institute is seeking local projects that aim to improve patient care and enhance nurses’ leadership skills. Projects can be led by community nurses. Grants of up to £5,000 are available as well as a year of professional development and support.
