E v A I, ~1L of elecwmic fetal monitoring has been well detnottstra~ed.‘+’ Only one report has appeared to the contrarv.’ However, when the statement was made at the Society for obstetrical Anesthesia and Perinatology (Philadelphia, April 4 and 5, 1975) that all anesthesia residents are taught electronic fetal monitoring, no ans\\er wncerning residencies in obstetrics and gynecology NX available. Accordingly, a survey of obstetrics and gynecology residencies in the United Srates and Canada was made. The questionnaire coyered other types of ante- and intraparntm monitoring, sinw these data were also unavailable. The intent of the surwy is several-fold: (1) to accumulate a data base of’ present practices, (2) to allow residency directors cotnparison pvith other areas and national norms, (3) to begin formulation of na&nal standards available to thr various Review (Jotnmittees, and (4) to allow nonteaching hospitals to anticipate the needs of future practitioners of obstetric? and gynecology. -1.~

Responses were received from 275) progratns, 263 in the United States and 16 in Canada. Kestths are tahuiated for the entire group (Table I) and for two types of subdivisions: (I) Programs frotn (Canada, and, itt the United States, Military, Uttiversit! , Lniversithaffiliated. and nonaffiliated programs: amI (2) progratns with f&er diati 2,000, 2,(JO(J LO 5~000. or tnow than 5,OO(J deliveries annually (Table II).
