Dekker programme of the

Netherlands Heart Foundation

Personalgrants for cardiovascular talents The Dr E. Dekker programme of the Netherlands Heart Foundation (NHF) is a stimulation programme which contains fellowships for outstanding investigators - clinicians and non-clinicians - in the cardiovascular field. In the Netherlands Heart Journal of March 2006 we informed you about the Dr E. Dekker fellowships which were awarded in 2005. In our following columns Dr E. Dekker awardees will tell you about their research they are performing within the programme. In this number we will provide you with an outline of the programme and the present fellowships within it. Alms of the Dr E. Dekker programme The aims of the Dr E. Dekker programme are: - To stimulate the personal career ofoutstanding investigators in all stages, supplementary to the regular project grants of the NHF. The investment is meant to facilitate an important step in their careers; - To stimulate potential investigators to conduct research in the cardiovascular field; - To attract investigators to the cardiovascular field of research; - To realise and support the formation of a well-trained pool of high-level cardiovascular investigators in the Netherlands. The programme consists of grants for students, physicians before speciality training, physicians in speciality training, postdoctoral fellows, junior staff members and (clinical) established investigators. Since 1999 the Dr E. Dekker programme involves two lines, one for non-clinical investigators and one for clinical investigators.

The Dr E. Dekker programme contains the following fellowships: * Scholarships for students (clinical and non-clinical) These scholarships support students who want to perform a research training period outside their own institute. The aim of these studentships is to awaken the interest of students in cardiovascular research. * Physician before speciality training (clinical) This fellowship is intended for young physicians who still have to fulfil their speciality training and are at the starting point of a possible scientific career. This grant enables them to perform research before their clinical training. With this fellowship the NHF wants to stimulate them towards cardiovascular research. It is designed to pave the way for these physicians to combine research and patient care in the future. The duration of this fellowship is one to two years.

* Physician in speciality training (clinical) This scholarship supports physicians in speciality training by providing them research assistance. It enables them to

continue doing research during their clinical training. In this way the NHF hopes to motivate the physicians to perform scientific research within the cardiovascular field and to attract them to the cardiovascular field. This fellowship also aims to strengthen the connection between pre-clinic and clinic. This grant also enables physicians to obtain their PhD degree if they have not already done so. The duration of this fellowship is a maximum of three years. * Junior Staff Member (clinical) This fellowship is directed at physicians who have completed their speciality training and recently have gained a permanent position within a medical centre. It aims at realising protected research time, so they can start building up their own research line or finding their own position within an existing research line. This fellowship also aims at strengthening the connection between pre-clinic and clinic. The duration of this fellowship is a maximum of three years.

* Postdoctoral fellow (non-clinical) This postdoctoral fellowship aims at binding postdocs to cardiovascular research. In this way it is hoped to stimulate the formation of a well-trained pool of high-level cardiovascular investigators. The standard duration of this fellowship is a maximum offour years. In the fourth year the postdoctoral fellow can apply for a prolongation of his/her appointment by two years and for an additional PhD student-position. * Clinical Established Investigator (clinical) This fellowship is meant for specialists who have obtained their PhD and have at least six years ofresearch experience. The aim of this fellowship is twofold, namely: - To further facilitate the formation of a research group around an established investigator; - To profile an established investigator, thereby bringing a professorship within reach. The duration of this fellowship is a maximum of five years. * Established Investigator (non-clinical) This fellowship is meant for non-clinical investigators who have obtained their PhD and have at least six years ofresearch experience. The aims of this fellowship are equal to those of the Clinical Established Investigatorship. The duration of this fellowship is a maximum of five years.
