Editorial debate on the future of nurse education

In a recent issue of the International Nursing Studies I made a case for nursing to be a graduate profession (Norman, 2014). My editorial was in a response to some comments made by the UK Secretary of State for Business, Innovation and Skills, Vince Cable, about qualification inflation and that one did not need a degree to be a nurse. In responding to my editorial Cable invited a debate on the balance to be struck between vocational and academic training and the potential of higher level (he cited level 4) apprenticeship training. In this issue we continue this debate with a Guest Editorial from John Wells, to which I respond. The editors

would like to invite further contributions to this important dialogue. Please submit commentaries on the papers published hitherto for publication in future issue. Reference Norman, I.J., 2014. Nursing must be a graduate profession (Well, he would say that, wouldn’t he!) Int. J. Nurs. Stud. 51, 523–525.
