Editorial for the ICOPA XIII Special Issue Mexico City was selected as the venue for the International Congress of Parasitology (ICOPA) to be held August 10–15, 2014. Previous meetings have been in Melbourne, Australia (2010), Glasgow, Scotland (2006), Vancouver, Canada (2002), Hokkaido, Japan (1998), Izmir, Turkey (1994), Paris, France (1990), Brisbane, Australia (1986), Toronto, Canada (1982), Warsaw, Poland (1978), Munich, Germany (1974), Washington DC, United States of America (1970) and Rome, Italy (1964). The current Scientific Committee decided to organize a program that involved some of the most experienced and successful researchers in the field of parasitology. In this Special Issue of the International Journal for Parasitology, 10 papers, seven of which are invited articles from plenary speakers and three from invited symposia speakers, are published. To ensure that an inclusive and high quality scientific program would be assembled, 12 plenary speakers were invited, covering the most important parasites and disciplines within parasitology; moreover, the local scientific committee asked renowned parasitologists from all over the world and Presidents of National Societies of Parasitology to recommend symposia. The suggested speakers were scrutinized using the Scopus database; the final program of invited symposia includes 128 sessions with four speakers each. Symposia deal with 31 different parasites related to human and animal disease, zoonotic transmission, opportunistic infections, vector biology and marine parasitology. Subjects covered in the program (25) are also diverse and include immunology, epidemiology, cell biology, molecular biology, ecology and many others. Forty-seven different countries are represented in the invited symposia, and 54% of the speakers live in America, 29% in Europe, 9% in Asia, 7% in Oceania and 1% in Africa. Oral unsolicited papers have been organized based on parasite and subject and will be presented in 44 sessions of eight presentations each across the 4 days of the ICOPA conference. A further aim is to have a green, paperless congress, thus we organized electronic poster presentations in which each participant has 60 min for discussion of his/her work presented in one of nine electronic trees, each carrying four 138 cm (52 inch) screens. Up to 300 graduate students and young scientists have had their registration fees waived, most of them from developing countries as well as undergraduate students from Mexico. We are sure that ICOPA XIII will be unique due to the breadth of origin of invited speakers and the technological innovations employed. Important sponsors of the meeting include the Mexican National Council of Science and Technology,

Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, Slim Health Foundation, Drugs for Neglected Diseases initiative, Burroughs Welcome Foundation, National Autonomous University of Mexico, National Polytechnic Institute, Center for Research and Advanced Studies and the National Institute of Pediatrics, as well as pharmaceutical companies, scientific publishers and laboratory suppliers. Finally, ICOPA is the most important world summit for parasitology, and we believe that Mexico is the perfect venue for such an event. Mexico City is the oldest capital of the American continent. It has beautiful architecture, pre-Hispanic sites and museums, which, jointly with Mexican gastronomy, will be a highlight for ICOPA XIII attendees. We look forward to welcoming you!
