EDITORIAL INTRODUCTION – EUROPEAN JOURNAL OF MICROBIOLOGY AND IMMUNOLOGY
Welcome to the first issue of the European Journal of Microbiology and Immunology (EU-JMI). The Editorial Board is confident that you will enjoy reading the articles and benefit from the scientific input. I would like to thank the scientists who contributed to the first issue with providing thought-provoking articles. I also want to thank the international Editorial Board for their professional support. The new journal will be published in yearly volumes, on a quarterly basis, and will include invited reviews, original research articles, short communications, and clinical studies in the field of medical microbiology and immunology of infection. The European Journal of Microbiology and Immunology publishes peer-reviewed findings in areas of infections caused by pathogenic parasites, bacteria, funghi and viruses, as well as host–pathogen interactions, molecular mechanisms of pathogenicity, innate and adaptive immunity to infection, and antimicrobial chemotherapy. The field of medical microbiology and immunology is an extremely fast-growing discipline. The lack of effective therapies and vaccines against microbes, the increasing emergence of multi-resistant pathogens, and thus limited treatment options for infectious diseases reflect our need as a scientific community to further deepen our understanding of the immunological basis of pathogen clearance and resistance as well as the pathogenesis of infectious diseases. The Editorial Board believes that the journal will attract many international scientists and will provide an essential forum for discussions on several aspects of microbial pathogens, immunology of infection, and therapy of infectious diseases. The field of host–pathogen interactions is an important example of the many areas of biomedical sciences that will bring great discoveries with the potential to change our understanding of disease and enable us to develop better preventatives and therapeutics. We are very much looking forward to the challenge of launching this new journal and introducing it to the scientific community!
