EDITORS’ MESSAGE Last year, for the first time in the 30-year history of the Journal of Vascular SurgeryÒ, we introduced a new publication, the Journal of Vascular Surgery: Venous and Lymphatic DisordersÔ. The Society for Vascular Surgery and the American Venous Forum collaborated in the sponsorship of this new quarterly peer-reviewed publication. As we enter the second year of its publication, our vision and our commitment is to see this new publication become the leading academic journal in the field of venous and lymphatic diseases and to highlight the leadership of vascular surgeons in these areas. We were able to establish this new journal in part due to the strength and success of the Journal of Vascular SurgeryÒ. Despite increasing competition in the journalistic community, by all metrics, the Journal of Vascular SurgeryÒ continues to be the leading and most influential vascular surgical journal. Our pre-eminence in the publication of clinical and research studies in the vascular surgical, endovascular, and medical management of vascular disease is reflected in the observation that in 2014 we received >1800 manuscript submissions, an all-time record high, with >60% of the manuscripts submitted from outside the United States, reflecting the international status of the publication. The Journal of Vascular SurgeryÒ, by all objective metrics, has become the pre-eminent publication in the field of vascular and endovascular therapy in the world. However, we recognize that continued success in any endeavor requires maintaining one’s core values and adhering to one’s fundamental mission while continuously adapting strategies to a changing world. In fact, the world of academic publishing is rapidly evolving with the introduction and growth of open access publishing. As we enter this New Year, we are proud to introduce the third peer-reviewed publication of the Society for Vascular Surgery: the Journal of Vascular SurgeryÒ Cases. This new journal, devoted exclusively to the publication of the highest-quality case reports and vascular images, represents the Society’s first open access publication. In addition to allowing us to enter this new publishing model, it will allow us to increase the publication of case reports and vascular images, two manuscript types that are extremely popular among our readership. To continue to steward the maturation of the Journal of Vascular Surgery: Venous and Lymphatic DisordersÔ and guide the development of the Journal of Vascular SurgeryÒ Cases, we are pleased to accept the offer of the Society for Vascular Surgery Publishing Committee to extend our editorial leadership roles into 2016. We remain proud to continue in these roles and are excited about the future of what is now our family of peer-reviewed publications. Our editorial mission has been to not only serve as stewards of the tradition of excellence that has been the hallmark of the Journal of Vascular SurgeryÒ since its inception but also to strive to improve continually the product that we bring to our readership. As we bring this year to a close, we can confidently report that the state of the primary publication of the Society for Vascular Surgery is stronger than ever, and about to become even stronger. Although we have remained true to the mission of the Journal in publishing high-quality clinical and basic science research studies, we have also been mindful of our responsibility to serve the educational and practice needs of the broad readership we serve, including practicing vascular and endovascular surgeons in community and academic practice and surgeons in training. With new information being developed faster than at any time in our history and practice paradigms continually evolving, as we move forward, we will be publishing an increasing number of special feature manuscripts that will bring this evolving information to our readers in a user-friendly fashion such as review articles and meta-analyses. The expansion of our publication products represents an affirmation of our commitment to that ideal. Our editorial leadership of the Journal of Vascular SurgeryÒ reflects our commitment to the fundamental mission of the Journal; namely, the publication of the most scholarly clinical and basic science research studies and unique case reports in the area of circulatory disease in addition to adding new special features of interest to the vascular specialist. The high quality of the published work would not be possible without the compulsive, rigorous, thoughtful, and constructive nature of our reviewers’ critiques, the support of our partners on the editorial leadership team, and the excellence and attention to detail of our editorial team. We are indebted to all these stakeholders for the thoroughness and fairness of our peer-review process and the smooth operation of the Journal. We truly appreciate their support as we seamlessly launched the Journal of Vascular Surgery: Venous and Lymphatic DisordersÔ and now also launch the Journal of Vascular SurgeryÒ Cases. Entering this New Year we remain mindful of our responsibility to our readership and dedicated to continually improve the quality of our publishing products. We wish you all a wonderful holiday season, and a happy, healthy, and peaceful New Year. Anton N. Sidawy, MD, MPH Editor-in-Chief

ACKNOWLEDGMENT OF REVIEWERS The Journal uses a rigorous peer-review process, in which each submitted manuscript is externally reviewed by at least three people, including at least one member of the Editorial Board, selected for their expertise in the particular topic that is the subject of the manuscript. The Editors then carefully consider these reviews. To review this large number of submitted manuscripts, in addition to our Editorial Board members, nearly 400 individuals participated as reviewers for the Journal during the past year. The Editors would like to acknowledge all of the reviewers who have contributed to this process during that time, and whose efforts are so critical to making the Journal the outstanding scientific publication that it has become. This is a voluntary effort performed by individuals during their personal time to advance the discipline of vascular surgery and endovascular therapy. The quality and effect of any scientific journal is primarily dependent on the quality of its peerreview process. We have been extremely impressed by the rigor and insightfulness of reviews performed for the Journal, which in many cases have substantially improved the quality of our published articles and therefore the overall quality of the Journal. The Editors express our sincerest thanks to all reviewers for their contributions this past year. ACKNOWLEDGEMENT OF ASSOCIATE AND ASSISTANT EDITORS We are very grateful for the contributions of our Associate Editors during this past year: Drs Thomas Brothers and Thomas Forbes, who serve as Clinical Studies Editors, and Dr Peter Henke who serves as the Basic Science Editor. Their efforts have ensured both the timeliness and quality of our review process, especially during this past year with the increased editorial workload, and they each have contributed significantly to the success and quality of the Journal. We also want to express our sincerest appreciation to our Assistant Editors, who have also participated in the editorial leadership of the Journal. They have helped solicit, select, and write content for various sections, including several new features introduced this year that have significantly broadened and enhanced the overall content and value of the Journal for our readership. We are especially grateful to Dr James Jones for his contributions as Editor of the Ethics Section, an extremely influential and popular feature of the Journal. We are also grateful for the leadership of Dr Gregory Moneta for his efforts as Editor of the Abstracts Section, Dr Richard Cambria for his management of the Review Article Section, and Dr Peter Lawrence, who has managed several special features, including Vascular & Endovascular Techniques, Practice Management, Clinical Trials Update, and Expert Debates. Special thanks also to Dr Norman Rich for his leadership in developing and managing our Historical Vignettes feature. We would also like to thank Dr Sean Roddy, who is responsible for the CPT Advisor’s Section, one of several features added to the Journal with the practicing vascular surgeon in mind. ACKNOWLEDGEMENT OF THE EDITORIAL BOARD Each manuscript received by the Editors is rated according to its quality, accuracy, insight, and helpfulness to the authors of the submission and to the Editors. Editorial Board members are selected on the basis of an objective evaluation of the quantity, quality, and timeliness of their peer reviews. Our goal is to include as many of our best reviewers as possible on the Editorial Board. Original manuscripts submitted to the Journal are reviewed by at least one member of the Editorial Board, who also submit Invited Commentaries and perform other duties for the Journal. During the past year, members of the Editorial Board each performed an average of 13 reviews and accounted for 29% of all the reviews that were done. The Editors would particularly like to recognize the following Editorial Board members who will be retiring from the Board after many years of valuable service and countless hours of unselfish work in this process. We would also like to welcome the new members of the Editorial Board, selected according to the process described above and who will begin in January. CONTINUING BOARD MEMBERS Ahmed M.
