Editors’ note Since 2006, the Journal of Spinal Cord Medicine (JSCM) has been guided by Editor-in-Chief Donald Bodner, MD. During Dr. Bodner’s tenure, the Journal has become firmly established as a leading voice in the field of spinal cord injury (SCI) care and research. JSCM’s reputation as an academic and professional journal was firmly cemented as it moved to an internationally renowned publisher, Maney Publishing, and expanded to six issues annually. The impact factor, as published annually in Thomson Reuters’ Journal of Citation Reports, rose during Dr. Bodner’s tenure, along with the number of manuscript submissions from a widening circle of researchers and clinicians around the world. JSCM and the community of SCI professionals owe immense gratitude to Dr. Bodner for his leadership and vision. On August 1, 2015, we welcome our new Editor-in-Chief, Florian P. Thomas, MD, MA, PhD, of St. Louis University School of Medicine and the St. Louis VA Medical Center. Dr. Thomas is a clinician scientist with management experience who is uniquely qualified to lead JSCM. He has served on the editorial boards of four journals, including JSCM, and as a peer reviewer for more than a dozen others. Board certified in neurology, spinal cord medicine and neural repair and rehabilitation, he also holds doctorates in molecular biology/neurosciences and microbiology. Dr. Thomas has also earned a master’s degree in gerontology and is a candidate for a master’s degree in health outcomes research. His research interests include the clinical and scientific aspects of multiple sclerosis, SCI, neurorehabilitation, neurogenetics, retroviral neurological diseases, Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease, autoimmunity in diseases of the nervous system, as well as vocational rehabilitation, sexual health, pain management and the history of medicine. Dr. Thomas has received research funding from private industry, the Department of Veterans Affairs and numerous foundations and societies. Dr. Thomas is an author of more than 60 peer-reviewed publications, more than 40 book chapters and monographs, and numerous abstracts and educational programs. Named among ‘Best Doctors in America’ and ‘Best Doctors in St. Louis’, he has served on many clinical and academic committees and task forces. Dr. Thomas often lectures to both consumer and professional audiences. We are confident that under Dr. Thomas’ guidance JSCM will continue to grow and improve as a key forum for SCI research and care. Your opportunity to personally welcome Dr. Thomas as Editor and thank Dr. Bodner for his 9 years of service is coming up soon! Both will be on hand at the annual ASCIP Educational Conference “SCI… and All That Jazz!” to be held in New Orleans, Louisiana from September 7–9. Registration for the conference is now open and we hope to see many of you there. The conference site, which includes links for registration and the conference program, is http://www.academyscipro.org/Public/Conference2015.aspx. As always, we welcome your comments and reflections on our articles and other topics, and encourage you to share your expertise and research with the readers of JSCM.
