Endorsing Chennai declaration and implementing the strategy *Reba Kanungo

Guest editorial in Indian Journal of Medical Microbiology entitled Chennai Declaration: An initiative our country could be proud of by A. Ghafur (Indian Journal of Medical Microbiology, (2014) 32 (1): 1‑2) outlines the conceptualisation and planning of a document on mechanisms to contain the rapid rise and spread of antibiotic resistant micro‑organisms in hospitals and the community. Global community has responded to the challenge of emerging antibiotic resistance through individual and group initiatives. Several organisations and academic bodies have been working towards a common goal for halting the rise in antibiotic resistance and are on the lookout for partnership for a global effort. Few such associations which have approached IAMM for endorsing the policy are The PARIS declaration of WAAAR (World Alliance Against Antibiotic Resistance (http://www.waaar.org) and European Society for Clinical Microbiology and Infectious Diseases (ESCMID) (https://www.escmid.org/escmid_library/medical_ guidelines/escmid_guidelines/). Indian Association of Medical Microbiologists in the XXXVII National Conference held from 22nd ‑24th November 2013 endorsed the Chennai declaration in principle. *Corresponding author (email: )  Department of Microbiology, Research and Head of Clinical

Clinical Microbiologists must lobby among their clinical colleagues and appraise them on problems of emerging antibiotic resistance. The Chennai declaration is one such venture which outlines a practical step‑by‑step strategy for containment of antibiotic resistance. Clinical microbiologists can implement the strategies outlined in Chennai declaration in their hospitals by playing a proactive role and participating in hospital antibiotic monitoring, surgical prophylaxis advocacy, and hospital infection control practices. The document also recommends active participation in National antibiotic network to provide country wide data on antibiotic resistance and research on molecular epidemiology of multidrug‑resistant bacteria. Keeping abreast with current developments microbiologists can make an impact in infection control and antibiotic stewardship, antibiotic usage modules through continuing medical education, and active participation in antibiotic awareness day activities. Stepping up microbiology facilities in hospitals capable of performing cultures of all kinds of samples, improving technical scope of primary and secondary level laboratories and using software based programmes for antibiotic data analysis and dissemination are the other recommendations of the Chennai declaration. Several microbiology laboratories in the country are already part of the process outlined in the declaration. Together with the policy document of Govt. of India “The National Policy For Containment Of Antimicrobial Resistance India 2011 ‑ Directorate General of Health Services Ministry of Health and Family Welfare Nirman Bhawan, New Delhi successful implementation of comprehensive antibiotic resistance monitoring control programme can be possible if these guidelines such as the Chennai declaration, are followed in letter and spirit.
