Expect the unexpected Remember how I talked with such certainty last month about the unpredictability of the general election outcome? How differently things turned out from expected: the Conservatives back in, this time with a majority, humiliating defeats for Labour and the Lib Dems, and extraordinary gains for the Scottish National Party. Back in too is Jeremy Hunt as health secretary, but facing a combination of concerns and challenges that will be familiar to him and to senior nurses across the country: safe staffing levels, pay, health service reform and funding.

As reported in this month’s Nursing Management, the government is also pushing ahead with plans for a seven-day NHS (page 6), one reason why the resolution to reject the proposed scrapping of unsocial hours payments at this year’s RCN congress, being held this month, is so important.

Lone working, workforce planning and stress at work are also among the resolution topics in Bournemouth, while matters for discussion include integrating care and the future of the four branches of nursing.

NURSING MANAGEMENT

The resolution to reject the proposed scrapping of unsocial hours payments at this year’s RCN congress is so important

Nick Lipley Editor

There are a number of fringe events that will be worth following, including two events supported by RCNi: one on the race equality standard in practice and one on revalidation, a topic covered extensively on our website, at www.rcni.com I hope to attend the first of these and take part in a ‘meet-the-editor’ session scheduled for the Tuesday morning, though coverage of the main congress events will be available through the website, at www.rcn.org.uk With the new government just weeks old, RCN congress 2015 represents a significant opportunity for nurses to have their voices heard. Whether you are going to Bournemouth this month or following RCN congress online, let us know what you think as the themes unfold: by email at [email protected], through the RCNi management and leadership forum at rcni.com/hub/management-andleadership or on Twitter @EditorNM Which way the resolutions will go is something I am leaving for others to predict; I learned my lesson last month.

Our mission Nursing Management inspires and shares professional excellence in nursing leadership and patient care. The journal is editorially independent and opinions expressed in it do not necessarily reflect the policy of the RCN, nor that of any contributor’s employing organisation, unless specifically stated.
