Fifth International AFMBioMed Conference on AFM in Life Sciences and Medicine, 7–11 May 2013, Shanghai, China The 5th edition of the AFMBioMed Conference was organized by the Shanghai Institute of Applied Physics (SINAP), Shanghai, China and the Life Science Division of The French Alternative Energies and Atomic Energy Commission (CEA), France. The conference was held in the Meeting Room of the Shanghai Synchrotron Radiation Facility on May 7–11, 2013 and chaired by Professor Jun Hu.

Parot (CEA/DSV, Marcoule, France), Jean-Luc Pellequer (CEA/Direction des Sciences du Vivant (DSV), Marcoule, France), Simon Scheuring (Institut national de la santé et de la recherche médicale (INSERM) U1006, Marseille, France), Vesna Svetlicic (Rudjer Boskovic Institute, Zagreb, Croatia), Hirofumi Yamada (Kyoto University, Kyoto, Japan), Wenke Zhang (Tsinghua University, China). Associated with the meeting, a training day including technical special lectures was organized with the help of Bruker-nano on May 7. The main program of the conference included eight half day sessions that are summarized in the table in the succeeding texts. AFMBioMed gives priority to the largest number of oral presentations from the scientific community, 66 in total including four chair lectures, four plenary lectures, three invited lectures, and 55 selected oral presentations from the submitted abstracts, Session

supplemented by 26 poster communications. The organizing committee is pleased to thank Dr Bin Li and her team for the great work they performed before and during the meeting. As for the previous editions, the 5th AFMBioMed conference favored networking with the organization of a beautiful social event that consisted in an impressive cruise dinner on the Huangpu River. We are pleased to present the first virtual special issue of the AFMBioMed Conference where eight manuscripts were accepted and published during the year 2013. Their references are indicated in the succeeding texts with a direct link to papers. These papers provide a wide view of the scientific topics that were covered in the 5th AFMBioMed Conference Shanghai 2013. We wish you a pleasant reading of the following contributions. Sungjo Park, In-Wook Hwang, Yu Makishima, Ester Perales-Clemente, Tatsuya Kato, Nicolas Niederlander, Enoch Y Park, and Andre Terzic Spot14/Mig12 heterocomplex sequesters polymerization and restrains catalytic function of human acetyl-CoA carboxylase 2. doi:10.1002/jmr.2313.

Founded in June 2006, after a first seminal French speaking conference held on the same topics in Nîmes on June 2004, AFMBioMed Conference brings researchers and students around the world to discuss the latest scientific results of atomic force microscopy in life science and medicine (Parot et al., 2007). AFMBioMed organized its first international meeting in Barcelona, Spain, in 2007 (Pellequer et al., 2007) followed, every 18 months, by Monterey, CA, USA, in 2008 (Kumar et al., 2009), Crveni otok (Red Island) near the Adriatic City of Rovinj, Croatia, in 2010 (Svetlicic et al., 2011), and Paris in 2011 (Scheuring et al., 2012). This fifth edition welcomed 150 students and researchers from 17 countries in the large amphitheater of the Shanghai Synchrotron Radiation Facility, Shanghai. Partners of the event were the following: the SINAP, the French Alternative Energies and Atomic Energy Commission (CEA/DSV Marcoule, France), the Shanghai Jiao Tong University, the Shanghai Normal University, the Shanghai Society of Biophysics, the Shanghai Nanotechnology Promotion Center, the Chinese Academy of Sciences, and the National Science Foundation of China. Financial contribution from Bruker AXS and Wiley is gratefully acknowledged. The members of the organizing committee were the following: Giovanni Dietler (École polytechnique fédérale de Lausanne, Lausanne, Switzerland), Xiaohong Fang (Institute of Chemistry, Chinese Academy of Sciences, Beijing, China), Christoph Gerber (Universität Basel, Basel Switzerland), Ning Gu (Southeast University, China), Jun Hu (SINAP, Shanghai, China), Jinfeng Jia (Shanghai Jiao Tong University, Shanghai, China), Sanjay Kumar (University of California, Berkeley, USA), Stephen Minne (Bruker, Santa Barbara, USA), Daniel Navajas (Universitat de Barcelona, Barcelona, Spain), Pierre

We wish to thank all the contributors to this volume and more particularly the 19 reviewers that participated to the rigorous peer-review selection of submitted manuscripts. We are glad to announce the 6th AFM BioMed Conference that will be chaired by Prof Adam Engler and hosted by the University of California, San Diego, USA. The conference venue is the Sanford Consortium for Regenerative Medicine building, University of California, San Diego (UCSD), on December 13–17, 2014 (http://www.afmbiomed. org/san-diego-2014.aspx) We are looking forward to seeing you in San Diego in December 2014.
