FOREWORD Once again The Orton Dyslexia Society is privileged to present a series of papers by distinguished researchers and practitioners in the field of dyslexia. Each year our Associate Editors and members of the Editorial Advisory Board review an increasing number of submissions. This reflects both a growing interest in all aspects of dyslexia and a recognition of the position that Annals of Dyslexia has achieved in this field. Publication of Annals of Dyslexia is a year-round task, with much of the work being done by volunteer readers. The Society's annual national conference continues to be a primary source for much of the contents, but each year we receive more unsolicited manuscripts than in the previous year. We welcome this trend for it substantiates our view that more and more scholars are turning their attention to the issues of language learning disorders. The 1991Annals of Dyslexia marks my eighth year as Managing Editor. Over the course of these years I have had the pleasure of meeting and working with many of the finest workers and writers concerned with dyslexia. I have had the support of knowledgeable and skilled professionals who have given their time to review the works submitted to this journal; and I have had at my right hand one of the very best copyeditors and proofreaders, Myra K. Hicks. To her and to all who continue to make Annals possible each year, I again express my gratitude. If you are interested in submitting a paper to be considered for publication in the 1992 Annals of Dyslexia, please request a copy of Information for Contributors from the Society and follow it carefully when preparing your paper. In addition to this style guide, we suggest that prospective authors familiarize themselves with and adhere to the principles of good writing found in The Elements of Style by William Strunk and E. B. White, available in paperback at most bookstores. Our goal, as befits an organization devoted to language usage, is to have Annals reflect the highest standards of clear, concise, comprehensible writing. All papers in the current issue, as well as previous issues (including those from Bulletin of the Orton Society) are available from The Orton Dyslexia Society, Chester Building/Suite 382, 8600 LaSalle Road, Baltimore, Maryland 21204-6020. Cost, including postage and handling for reprints and photocopies is $3.00. An index of past papers covering the years 1957-86 may be purchased for $2.00.
