From the Editor

Initial work on the Journal of Women & Aging began in 1985 under the auspices of Haworth Press. After two years of planning, selecting a multidisciplinary editorial board, and soliciting articles, the first volume appeared in 1987. At that time we were a journal with an editorial board from the United States, and articles were submitted solely by American authors. Later, as submissions began to come in from Canada, two Canadian editorial board members were added. For several years the Journal of Women & Aging continued to receive manuscripts almost exclusively from the United States and Canada. While still a part of Haworth Press, we slowly began to receive articles from other countries. However, the volume of articles from other than North America was insufficient to add reviewers from countries other than the United States and Canada. A few years ago, Haworth Press was acquired by Taylor & Francis Group. Following that acquisition, more and more manuscripts were received from around the globe. At this juncture, our editorial board members are from Australia, Canada, Ireland, Israel, Singapore, Sweden, the United Kingdom, and the United States. While a majority of our submissions continue to be from North America, for the first time we are approaching submissions from outside North America constituting half of all manuscripts received. Since all manuscripts are submitted in the English language, reviewers must be fluent in English. That presents a bit of a dilemma in increasing our editorial board to include reviewers from non–English-speaking countries. A second dilemma is that the number of authors from countries not yet represented on our editorial board far exceeds the number of editorial board slots available. In the past, it has been possible to select a reviewer from the country of residence of the primary author. That is no longer the case, nor is it likely to be so, given the limited availability of editorial board slots and the number of submissions still coming from the United States and Canada. Even with those constraints, we are aware of the need to increase our editorial board to include additional countries. We are, therefore, asking our readers to submit recommendations for our editorial board of authors who have been published in the field of aging with a focus on women, who are fluent 205

in English, and who are from outside the countries already represented on our board. Readers who meet those criteria are also welcome to submit their own names. Reviewers can expect to receive between three and six manuscripts a year to review. A reviewer checklist is provided with each manuscript to assist reviewers in completing their reviews. When submitting recommendations, please include the e-mail address of the person being recommended, or if a self-recommendation, include your own e-mail address. Submit to [email protected].
