‘Great year’ for zoo masters course Students and staff from the Royal Veterinary College (RVC) were welcomed to the Zoological Society of London (ZSL) London Zoo on September 10 for the annual prize-giving ceremony for the two Masters courses that are run jointly by the RVC and the Zoological Society of London (ZSL). Having just completed their postgraduate studies, the students attended the reception to celebrate the top achievers on the courses. The Masters in Wild Animal Biology (MSc WAB) is aimed at non-veterinary biological science graduates and provides teaching on wild animal species, wild animal health, and welfare and conservation. The Masters in Wild Animal Health (MSc WAH) is aimed at qualified veterinarians and aims to equip students with knowledge of the management of wild animals, and the epidemiology, treatment and control of wild animal disease. This year, the student with the highest marks in the MSc WAB was Liam Fitzpatrick, who also won an award for the best research project for his work on ‘Epidemiological tracing of Batrachochytrium salamandrivorans infection following its detection in a UK amphibian collection’. Melisa Unger was the student with the overall best marks in the MSc WAH. Inez Januszczak won an award for the

best research project in the MSc WAB course for her work on ‘Assessing the impact of a feeding enrichment device on the behaviour and enclosure use of tree-runner lizards (Plica plica)’. Awards for the best posters were presented to Tom Bruce for ‘Management and enclosure design for the Chinese giant salamander (Andrias davidianus)’ and Alice Barrett for her poster ‘Aye-aye that’s good! Enrichment for zoo-housed aye-ayes

(Daubentonia madagascariensis)’. Both winners were students on the MSc WAB course. The awards were presented by Ralph Armond, director of the ZSL, and Tony Sainsbury, course director, who reported ‘a great year’ for the MSc WAB course, with one distinction and nine merits awarded to students. Two merits had also been awarded to students on the MSc WAH course. doi: 10.1136/vr.h5465
