Cooke, M.D., Ph.D., for serving as guest editors of this special issue on cardiac regenerative medicine. Paolo Decuzzi is a professor of biomedical and mechanical engineering at the Houston Methodist Hospital Research Institute, where he also serves as the chair ad interim of the Department of Translational Imaging. After earning his M.Sc. degree in mechanical engineering from the Politecnico di Bari in Italy and a Ph.D. in mechanical engineering from the University of Naples Federico II, Dr. Decuzzi worked as a visiting fellow and faculty at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, the Princeton Material Institute in Princeton, and the Heart and Lung Institute at Ohio State University. He has published more than 100 papers in the fields of nanomedicine, multiscale computational mechanics, and nanotheranostics and holds three U.S. patents. Dr. Decuzzi is cofounder and chair of the American Society for Mechanical Engineers’ NanoEngineering for Medicine and Biology committee. He also serves on multiple study sections for the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and the National Science Foundation and receives research support through the NIH, the U.S. Department of Defense, and the Cancer Prevention Research Institute of Texas. John P. Cooke chairs the Department of Cardiovascular Sciences at the Houston Methodist Research Institute and is director of the Center for Cardiovascular Regeneration in the Houston Methodist DeBakey Heart & Vascular Center. After earning his medical degree from Wayne State University and a Ph.D. from the Mayo Clinic, Cooke joined Harvard Medical School as an assistant professor of medicine. In 1990, he moved to Stanford University to spearhead the vascular biology and medicine program. He was later named professor of cardiovascular medicine at Stanford University School of Medicine and associate director of the Stanford Cardiovascular Institute, where he remained until his move to Houston Methodist Hospital in 2013. Dr. Cooke has published more than 500 collective papers, reviews, book chapters, and patents based on discoveries from his research on vascular regeneration. He has been an advisor to government, industry, and professional societies on matters of cardiovascular disease, public health, and technology and has served as president of the Society for Vascular Medicine, director of the American Board of Vascular Medicine, and associate editor of Vascular Medicine. debakeyheartcenter.com/journal
