HIPPOKRATIA Journal: A Fifteen Year Anniversary

The idea of a medical journal foundation for the medical doctors serving in the National Health System of Greece goes back to the 1980s but it was only a theoretical concept. During the Scientific Committee Presidency of Dr J. Liatsis and P. Traianidis at Hippokratio Hospital of Thessaloniki in 1995, the General Secretary of the Scientific Committee and Head of the Education Committee Dr G. Vergoulas suggested the idea of a new journal creation. After many meetings of the Education Committee on this topic during 1996, the initial suggestion of a new journal was transformed to a detailed proposal submitted to the Ministry of Health which accepted to finance the journal (four issues per year, 48 pages each issue, official language Greek and English). The initial scope of the journal was to publish the scientific work conducted in Hippokratio Hospital and other hospitals and to bring into a productive communication the scientists in matters of common interest. The first issue was published in January 1997 and the Education Committee comprised the first Editorial Board of the journal whose name “Hippokratia” was given by D. Lipourlis, Professor of Philosophy of the Aristotele’s University of Thessaloniki. The journal was published initially in Greek language with full abstracts in English. From the year 2000 full text articles in English were regularly published in the journal and since 2006 the journal is solely published in English. There is free access to the full text of the published articles through the journal’s site (www.hippokratia. gr) and PubMed Central. The journal is indexed / abstracted by PubMed Central, Scopus, EMBASE, Thomson Reuters’ (Science Citation Index Expanded, Journal Citation Reports / Science Edition), Free Medical Journals and Copernicus. The impact factor given by Thomson Reuters’ for the year 2010 is 0.66 and the ICV given by Copernicus is 9.00. The last two years the journal successfully initiated seminars for its reviewers on biostatistics and research methodology (‘How to read and write a paper’) aiming to improve the peer review process and manuscript quality. Currently the journal publishes articles from all over the world and has an international role. The number of submitted papers per year is constantly increasing and currently every issue numbers 96 pages. The hard copy of the journal is distributed all over Greece and Balkan Countries and in many medical libraries abroad. Hippokratia Journal is currently fully complying with the Uniform Requirements for Manuscripts by the International Committee of Medical Journal Editors and endorses the PRISMA, STROBE, STREGA, CONSORT, STARD guidelines and statements.
