Hypermedia in biomedical education: a case study

G. A. HUTCHINGS, P. THOROGOOD a n d W. HALL The origination, development and application of a hypermedia system for use in the life sciences is described. Implemented in the Apple Macintosh Hypercard environment, the project has been designed to make use of commercially produced laser discs as visual archives and has included the production of authoring and navigational tools. We report here on our experience in authoring stacks for undergraduate teaching, monitoring of student use and assessment of effectiveness as a self-teaching resource. Future developments and applications within the biomedical sciences are discussed. The term ‘hypertext’ was first used in the early 1960s to describe the idea of non-sequential writing’. A hypertext system is one which allows information to be linked together, enabling users to create their own routes through a body of related material rather than being directed by the author. ‘Hypermedia’ is an extension of hypertext, incorporating other media such as graphics, video and sound in addition to text’. Information in a hypermedia system can be described in terms of a network or web of discrete pieces of information ‘nodes’ - with ‘links’ existing between them. In education, ‘hypermedia’ is seen as a natural extension and progression of the use of interactive video. Most hypermedia systems available on computers commonly found in education include drivers for interactive videodisc, and the use of such systems in education and training is extensive. The most widely reported research study is the Intermedia Project at Brown University in the USA3. Other studies include the ILAB Project at the University of Southampton4, the StrathTutor Project at the University of Strathclyde5 and the Perseus Project at Harvard‘. These are examples of projects where sophisti-
