Asa Elmore Seeds 1905-1978 Doctor Asa Elmore Seeds died unexpectedly at his home on Mercer Island, Washington on September 4,1978. Doctor Seeds had recently moved to Washington from Tucson, Arizona, where he was in retirement, to be near his family. Born in Columbus, Ohio on November 29,1905, Asa Seeds attended William and Mary College in Williamsburg and received his M.D. degree from the University of Virginia in 1931. He was a resident in radiology at Johns Hopkins Medical School from 1932 to 1936 and later taught radiology there. From 1940 to 1944 he was Professor and Chairman of the Department of Radiology at Baylor University Medical School in Dallas and Director of the Tumor Clinic. During World War II he helped Douglas Aircraft Corporation establish overseas military hospitals in Africa. He then returned to Dallas and became associated with the Southwestern Medical School after the Baylor Medical School moved to Houston. In 1945, Doctor Seeds and his family moved to Vancouver, Washington, where he spent the major portion of his radiological career as Director of Radiology and Chief of Nuclear Medicine at Memorial Hospital until his retirement in 1970. Doctor Seeds joined the Radiological Society of North America in 1937. He was one of the founders of the Society of Nuclear Medicine, serving as President in 1954-1955 and as historian until 1970. Doctor Seeds was also President of the Clark County Medical Society and a member of the Board of Trustees of the Washington State Medical Association. Following his retirement from private practice, he became affiliated with the Veterans Administration where he served as radiologist in several hospitals. Asa was also active in cancer control. He was Director of the Clark County Detection Center and Tumor Registry in Vancouver and a member of the Board and Executive Committee of the Washington Division of the American Cancer Society as well as Vice-Chairman of its research committee. Doctor Seeds is survived by two sons, both physicians. Asa Jr. is Professor of Obstetrics and Gynecology at the University of Cincinnati Medical School. Lt. Commander John William Seeds, U.S. Navy, is an obstetrician currently serving in Rota, Spain. A daughter, Barbara Engel, lives nearby on Mercer Island, and another daugher, Suzee Merryman, resides in Los Angeles. Doctor Seeds was very close to his family and the devotion he showed them was returned many times over. He served on the vestry of St. Luke's Episcopal Church in Vancouver and was always ready to help in church causes.
