Frank M. Rice, M.D. 1900-1977
Dr. Frank M. Rice died on February 3, 1977 after practicing radiology in San Francisco, California for forty years. Dr. Rice was born in Chelsea, Massachusetts in 1900. He had his pre-medical training at Tufts University and graduated from the medical school in 1924. He interned at St. Luke's Hospital in San Francisco, followed by a residency in radiology at the University of Michigan Medical School. He did further study at Stanford University Hospital with Robert R. Newell and W. Edward Chamberlain. He established the department of radiology at Hahnemann Hospital in San Francisco and opened an office at 2000 Van Ness Avenue in San Francisco which has now been established fifty years. He also had a second office in San Rafael, California and was one of the first board certified radiologists in Marin County. During World War II he served in the Navy for four years, from 1942 to 1946, and attained the rank of Captain. He established the radiologic department for the Bay Area Rapid Transit while the tube was being constructed under the bay between San Francisco and Oakland. Dr. Rice was a member of the American College of Radiology, and a charter member of the Radiological Society of North America, San Francisco Radiologic Society, California Radiological Society, San Francisco Medical Society (which he joined in 1928), and AMA. Dr. Rice was devoted to his specialty and to the patients who came under his care. He demanded careful technique with attention to detail and used every effort to arrive at the correct diagnosis. As one patient wrote to his widow, "He truly and deeply cared about his patients and every x-ray was a personal matter to him." He is survived by his wife, Winifred; a daughter, Kathryn R. Blum, of San Mateo; a son, Howard F. Rice, of San Rafael; a sister, Sadie Rice, of San Francisco; and six grandchildren. JAMES T. ENGLISH, M.D.
