Editorial

In recognition of Dr. Kazuyuki Tanabes' contribution to parasitology and malaria research, the Japanese Society of Parasitology has dedicated this issue in his memory. Several collaborators and students have written reviews or prepared original articles in subject areas which are of interest or where Dr. Tanabe has contributed to. There are also short commentaries dedicated to acknowledging, appreciating and sharing their experience with Dr. Tanabe as a remainder to a very special scientist and teacher. One of his last essays is also published herein. Dr. Tanabe is a world-leading researcher in molecular evolutionary and population genetic analysis of Plasmodia and was highly respected by his contemporaries in Japan and abroad. He worked arduously to help advance malariology in Japan. And, he played a central role in the development of one project under the Grant-in-Aid for Scientific Research on Priority Areas: “Molecular approach for malaria control,” which was initiated in 1996. Dr. Tanabe made a significant contribution to the subsequent development and achievements of molecular parasitology. He retired as Specially Appointed Professor of the Research Institute for Microbial Diseases, Osaka University in 2011, much to the regret of all of his colleagues. Thereafter, he remained active in writing papers

while battling illness. Between 2011 and his untimely demise, he published 21 papers, including one that was published in the ‘Nature Genetics’ journal. There were also at least three papers, in which he serves as a corresponding author, which were accepted after he passed away last August 12, 2013. What we have learned from Dr. Tanabe is immeasurable. Dr. Tanabe always valued sound reasoning and strictly forbade deception and insincerity. His sincerity made a strong impression on both young and leading researchers. He was a generous, warm-hearted, but strict educator who fostered and trained younger researchers across Japan, earning their respect and affection. It is fitting that this dedication will be published in the Parasitology International—a journal he has strived hard to promote and serve as an inspiration to young Japanese researchers. Even after he retired from the front lines, he urged us to work harder: “A powerful thing about publishing is that a number of minds would be able to dwell on the information and surrounding queries brought forth by the new knowledge.” We would like to express our gratitude to the authors for their contributions. We hope readers would be inspired by the work herein in the same way that Dr. Tanabe has encouraged and touched us." T. Horii K. Kita T. Mita T. Tsuboi N. Palacpac
