Inspiring cancer nursing in the UK and beyond

I

t wasn’t until I was elected President of the United Kingdom Oncology Nursing Society (UKONS) that I really began to understand and appreciate the time, effort and commitment of my colleagues in the Society, and admire their sterling efforts to keep a vibrant, relevant and busy organisation on track. With 3000 members, UKONS has a real buzz about it as it seeks to remain fully engaged with the wide spectrum of activities that form part of cancer nursing. UKONS is a registered charity and its mission is ‘Inspiring Cancer Nursing’. It is made up of members from each of the UK countries who aspire to promote excellence in the nursing management and care of all those directly and indirectly affected by cancer. UKONS encourages and facilitates the personal and professional development of nurses engaged in cancer care through education, research and development of nursing practice, while influencing and advising on cancer policy, clinical practice and service delivery, nationally and internationally. Additionally, UKONS seeks to foster alliances between the UK and the international community. UKONS is also fully committed to a range of local and regional activity, and is determined to establish itself as an effective organisation and vigorous voice for cancer nurses at every level of practice, in every subspecialty of cancer nursing, in every part of the UK. All members are invited and encouraged to participate in groups, activities and events that are organised, supported or endorsed by UKONS. UKONS members are widely involved with a number of external groups and organisations that have an involvement, interest and input into cancer nursing. The Cancer Nursing Partnership (CNP) is one such group. This is a strategic partnership of nursing organisations that has been assembled to influence cancer care and is currently working to develop a focused and deliverable way to ensure that the Recovery Package (National Cancer Survivorship Initiative (NCSI), 2014) is used to assist those living with and beyond cancer. The Recovery Package places an emphasis on supported self-management and envisages a partnership with the individual affected by cancer. This approach is underpinned by an assessment of holistic needs, and the development of a care plan to address highlighted concerns. This, in turn, is supplemented by a treatment summary, which explains to GP and the individual what treatment has taken place. This should inform a cancer care review by the GP within 6 months of diagnosis. Finally, the individual will be invited to attend a health and wellbeing educational event. UKONS places a high premium on effective communication with its members, and central to this

is the UKONS website (www.ukons.org), while the quarterly newsletter and weekly Breaking News bulletin seem to be very popular and widely appreciated. While effective communication is integral to the work of UKONS, a strong presence on the ground is essential. Central to this is the UKONS Ambassadors network. Any UKONS member can become an Ambassador and, as such, provide the important link that binds the UKONS Board to the wider membership through the organisation of educational events, local recruitment and liaison. Details of local Ambassadors are available on the UKONS website, and they can be contacted with suggestions for educational and informational initiatives. The UKONS Board has always been aware of the importance of having a strong local base in every part of the UK. This is illustrated by the decision to hold the UKONS annual conference in Belfast (14–15 November 2014). An exciting and challenging programme awaits, including stimulating workshops on motivational-interviewing-based health coaching, patient information and support, as well as innovations in cancer treatment and care. Over 100 abstracts have been submitted for the poster exhibition and there will be a diverse array of worthy speakers addressing a range of topical issues that impact on cancer nursing. UKONS seeks to be at the forefront of developments in cancer nursing and has published position statements on a variety of topics including ‘Best practice in nurseled chemotherapy review’ (Lennan et al, 2012) as well as developing the 24-hour triage rapid assessment and access toolkit (UKONS, 2010). Joining UKONS couldn’t be easier, simply registering on the UKONS website will start the process. New members will receive the UKONS newsletter and bulletins, as well as information on activities, publications and reports, together with free admission to many UKONS events. Thanks to the support of our industry partners, there is currently no membership fee and all members are immediately afforded the opportunity to network and engage with the wider community of BJN cancer nurses from across the UK.
