INTERCOLLEGIATE ASSESSMENT .MAXILLOFACIAL SURGERY

Sir, The Intercollegiate Board in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgcry. the tenth such Surgical Board approved by the Joint Meeting of Surgical Colleges has been established. Its statutory composition includes a representative of each of the four Royal Surgical Colleges of Great Britain and Ireland, two Specialty Association (BAOMS) representatives and cx-officio the Chairman of SAC. Minutes and proposals of the Board are subject to the approval of the Joint Meeting of Surgical Colleges. WC wish to draw the following important proposals of the Board to the attention of the membership of BAOMS: I. Thcrc will be an Intercollegiate Assessment examination in Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery which will be a prerequisite to completion of Higher Training. or accreditation as it is known as present. 2. The Assessment will become mandatory for those enrolling in an SAC-approved Higher Training Programme after 30 Septcmbcr 1993. 3. The first Assessment examination will take place towards the end of 1994. 4. Those enrolled before 30 September 1993 may, if they wish, present themselves for the examination: but this is not obligatory. 5. Intercollegiate Assessment will be based on the possession of an FRCS Diploma of any of the Royal Surgical

Colleges. Possession of this indicative FRCS will exempt trainees from third tier assessment in Oral Surgery under FDS regulations.* It is intended that this assessment will normally be undertaken I2 I8 months before the completion of Higher Training at a stage when most trainees would be expected to have acquired sufficient knowledge in the normal course of their training.
