Intracranial Tumour in a Cow

Intracranial tumours in cattle are considered to be extremely rare, although a few cases of intracranial pituitary adenoma and carcinoma in cows have been described [l, 21. An aged cow was brought to the College Clinics with signs of respiratory disturbance, excitement, and ophthalmia of the right eye. The frontal bone was moderately soft, bulged and convex in appearance because of the pressure of the underlying tumour. Biopsy and haematological examinations were performed. The cow died after extirpation of the affected eyeball. A large triangular neoplastic mass 10x 6 x 5 in was found mainly in the cranial cavity and partly infiltrating into the nasal and other adjoining sinuses. The brain and meninges were unaffected but atrophied due to pressure. The texture of the tumour was like that of fibroma, but at places it was like that of cartilage and bone. Histologically, the tumour consisted mainly of neoplastic proliferation of fibrous tissue with occasional myxomatous transformation and at places formation of cartilaginous and osseous tissues. The frontal sinus lining cells showed marked hyperplasia. Haematological examination did not reveal any marked changes. The tumour was made up mainly of connective tissue elements: fibroblasts, chondroblasts, and osteoblasts, and had proliferation of pseudo-stratified epithelium of the frontal sinus lining cells. In addition, fibrous tissue had undergone myxomatous changes at several places, giving a picture of a typical mixed type of tumour. The voluminous mass of the tumour was responsible for the bulging of the frontal bone and displacement and protrusion of the right eyeball. Nervous symptoms may be ascribed to the constant pressure on the brain. P.C. MANDAL and BALWENT SINGH Department of Veterinary Pathology Punjab Agricultural University Litdhiunu (India)
