I am delighted to introduce what is our most comprehensive review of both health policy and health services in the People's Republic of China to date. The work has been done by Professor Xiaoming Sun and his colleagues, and I am indebted to Xiaoming for the marvellous job he has done as Guest Editor of such a substantial issue. I would also like to thank Lily Jiang, of Wiley Shanghai, for her support and hard work. Following Professor Sun's Preface, there are thirteen articles which cover both the key aspects of Chinese health policy since the reforms began in 2009 and all the main components of health services today. The reader will therefore find an invaluable review covering both content and evaluation of policy and services. The overall picture is a promising one, but problems and continuing challenges are not glossed over: it is a genuinely intellectual endeavour. I have the feeling that this collection will gain a prime place in the literature on account of its thoroughness, accessibility, comprehensiveness and yet attention to detail ‐ as well as, of course, its constructively critical contribution to the improvement of policy and services as a result.
