Dr. John Wooley, co-founder and managing editor for JBCB, passed away after a long battle with cancer. We have a lost a visionary, a brilliant scientist and a dear friend. John received his Ph.D. degree in 1975 at the University of Chicago, working with Al Crewe and Robert Uretz in biophysics. In the early 1980s, he foresaw the fusion of modern information science and biology. He left a professorship at Princeton in 1984 to join the NSF, where he created the ¯rst programs within the US federal government for funding research in bioinformatics and computational biology. He co-edited in 1992 a seminal workshop report \Computational Biology: An Overview" that has given crucial directions to our ¯eld. John is a true pioneer in our ¯eld. John's research focused on structure-function relations in protein-nucleic acid complexes and the architecture of chromatin and ribonucleoproteins. In recent years, John also worked on metagenomics. He mentioned to us several times about his course on \translational medicine", and we were convinced that he would ¯nd his ways to survive his cancer again, as he had done so for over 30 years. Since 2002, we were lucky to have worked with John, and together we created JBCB, the Journal of Bioinformatics and Computational Biology. John was a very modest and caring colleague. He loved and believed in our ¯eld. Even in the ¯nal weeks, he was still sending emails to us discussing future directions of JBCB, and he was planning to arrange a special issue on BioIT education. We are glad that Tonic Kazic, Ann Stapleton, and Deanne Taylor will be guest editing it. We also plan on publishing further special issues in BioIT education every three years in memory of John. Photography was John's main hobby. At the website http://bit.ly/1GWW5Zz, more than 400 images by John remind us the life and dream our dear friend John had lived. John ¯rmly believed that Bioinformatics and Computational Biology is an indispensable part of modern medical science that may one day cure his cancer. John did not see the day, but his work, as well as yours, are all contributing to this great science. Ming Li and Limsoon Wong Managing Editors 1501001-1
