JGG EDITORIAL

Journal of Genetics and Genomics in Transition Journal of Genetics and Genomics (JGG), sponsored by the Genetics Society of China and Institute of Genetics and Developmental Biology, Chinese Academy of Sciences, has become a high-quality societal journal in the fields of genetics and genomics by a joint effort of our authors, editorial board members and editorial office. Over the past two years, JGG has made substantial progresses in many aspects. Academic quality of papers is crucial to a journal. We have been striving to improve its academic quality by publishing many high-quality papers on some timely and cutting-edge topics, like clustered regularly interspaced short palindromic repeat sequences (CRISPR), single cell sequencing, RNA modifications, large noncoding RNAs, and next-generation sequencing. All of these papers have attracted a broad audience. We also published five special issues on exciting and key biological topics, including Meiosis (Issue Editors: Hong Ma, Qinghua Shi), Lipid Metabolism and Lipidomics: An Emerging Frontier in Biology (Issue Editors: Guanghou Shui, Xun Huang), Targeting Ageing (Issue Editors: Jingdong Han, John R. Speakman), Metabolism of Arginine and Pyrimidines (Issue Editor: Ji-Long Liu), and Cancer Genomics (Issue Editor: Jingwu Xie). Here, I would like to thank all of the issue editors for their time and great efforts. Professional services to authors are key to a societal journal like JGG. We have been providing rapid and professional reviews for each manuscript. From submission to the first decision, it now takes an average of about 1.9 weeks. In the past two years, about 20% papers have been accepted for publication. To ensure the editing quality, we have adjusted our editing process. Double copyediting and double proofreading have been implemented for each manuscript before its formal publication. From acceptance to online first, it takes about only ten days. In order to increase the global visibility of JGG and its published papers, we carried out several promotion actions in the past two years. We selected six high-quality papers for Open Access (OA) in 2014, and selected ten papers for 3-month free access in 2015. Conference exhibition is also a good way to promote a journal. We took part in more than ten genetics and

genomics conferences to show our journal in 2014 and 2015. We also prepared various promotion products, such as flyer, poster, and X display rack. Our publisher Elsevier also did good promotion work through Twitter, Facebook, Weibo and Flyer. Currently, JGG is attracting a broad international audience. In 2014 and 2015, both overseas manuscript submissions and publications have exceeded more than 40% of our total numbers. The JCR impact factor (IF) of JGG has shown a steady but rapid increase. In 2014 ISI JCR, its IF is 3.585 and ranks top 30% among all SCI genetics & heredity journals. Serving the genetics and genomics community is our journal’s mission. On December 6e8, 2015 in Shenzhen, China, JGG held the first International Symposium on Frontiers of Genetics and Genomics (Fig. 1), including three sections: Medical Genetics and Genomics, Animal Genetics and Development, and Plant Genetics and Genomics. Thirty leading scientists from different countries shared their cutting-edge discoveries in this symposium. The JGG symposium will be held in the following years. Meanwhile, the annual JGG editorial board meeting was held after the symposium on the afternoon of December 8. Thirty-three editorial board members attended this meeting. The Executive Editor-in-Chief, Dr. Ying Zhang, presented an overview of the activities from 2014 to 2015, journal performance, editorial performance and further development of JGG. All editorial board members offer their valuable suggestions on the role and responsibility of editors, academic quality, Open Access, journal promotion, editorial office work, and so on. A particular note is that Dr. Renjie Jiao was awarded Editor of the Year (2015) for his outstanding contribution to JGG. In 2016, new steps will be taken to further enhance the JGG’s academic quality and global impact. We will improve the publication criteria, attract more high-quality papers, and organize topical special issues/sections. We will strengthen our services by speeding up the editorial process and providing more professional editing work. Our editorial team is confident of a better future of JGG. Through the efforts of all editorial board members and editorial office, I believe JGG, as a leading international
