The corlperative formation of actin fiiments from monomers was f&owed by Ii&t scattering and electron microscopy. The results are well descriied by a simple model mechanism in which the growth and destruction of f’&ments occurs by stepwise addition or dissocktion of protamers- All steps except the diiesisation step are assumed to have identical rate constants. These were found to he 5 X 103 St” -S-SC-~ and 3 X IO-* set-1 for the association and dissociation, respectively
