CONFERENCE Laser Florence 2005 Conference Report November has become a regular fixture in the diary of many scientists, clinicians and laser enthusiasts; they are drawn to ‘‘Laser Florence’’ organized by Professor Leonardo Longo. Considering the cultural riches and accumulation of treasure within the city of Florence, it is a tribute to the programme of the congress that delegates are willing to sit in Villa Viviani for science when such a wealth of art is so close by (Fig. 1). 10—12 November 2005 saw the first dedicated session in the 20 year history of ‘‘Laser Florence’’ for Photo Diagnosis and Photo Dynamic Therapy. Editor in Chief, Keyvan Moghissi, presented the first paper of the plenary session on ‘‘The contribution of fluorescence bronchoscopy and photo dynamic therapy to lung cancer treatment’’ and Kate Dixon opened the next session with ‘‘Photo dynamic therapy of central type lung cancer: current indications based on 15 years experience and literature review’’. Other topics included autofluorescence diagnosis in gynaecology and 5ALA excited fluorescence in oral pre-malignancy. Two presentations, one from Israel and one from Sudan concerned the anti-bacterial effects of visible light. PDT was also featured in dermatalogical applications for the treatment of Acne Vulgaris and ophthalmic work treating age-related macular degeneration. A number of posters, too, focused on both PD and PDT. It was good to see medical and scientific colleagues from around the world gathered together to share experience. We look forward to ‘‘Laser Florence 2006.’’
