Letter From the Guest Editor: Interstitial Lung Disease

The art challenges the technology, and the technology inspires the art. – Johan Lassiter

The current issue of Seminars in Roentgenology is devoted toward the imaging of interstitial lung disease (ILD). ILD can be one of the most challenging aspects of thoracic radiology for several reasons. Differential diagnoses can be lengthy and complex, ranging from commonly encountered diseases to extremely rare entities. In addition, chest radiographs in patients with interstitial lung disease are often nonspecific, or even normal in some patients with proven diffuse pulmonary abnormalities. Our understanding of interstitial lung disease has progressed over the past 10 to 15 years, primarily from information obtained through high-resolution computed tomography (HRCT). Although chest radiographs remain the initial imaging study in most patients with suspected pulmonary disease, HRCT has been shown to be the modality of choice in patients with known or suspected interstitial lung disease. HRCT can show pulmonary parenchymal abnormalities in patients with normal or equivocal radiographic findings and may allow confident diagnoses in patients with nonspecific radiographic findings. The objective of this symposium is to provide a thorough state-of-the art review on imaging of interstitial lung diseases. Although the focus will be on HRCT, several articles will address chest radiographic findings as well. Topics in this issue emphasize the practical aspects of and timely topics in the diagnosis, staging, and management of ILD and are directed toward both practicing physicians and trainees alike.

I thank my co-authors for their considerable contributions to this issue. The articles are presented by academic radiologists who are experts in the field of cardiopulmonary imaging, with diverse backgrounds and experiences at institutions across the United States. It has been a pleasure and honor to work through this process with my distinguished colleagues. They have certainly made this symposium an outstanding, thorough review of imaging of interstitial lung disease. I am grateful to Jannette Collins, MD, MEd, FCCP, FACR, for inviting me to guest edit this installment and enabling me to have this opportunity and responsibility. In addition, I extend my appreciation to the editorial staff of the Seminars in Roentgenology for their assistance in this process.
