CHEMOTHERAPY AFTER MASTECTOMY

SIR,-Even in clinically early cases breast carcinoma is often disseminated beyond the reach of surgery’ so the value of adjuvant chemotherapy requires serious consideration. We would like to report the survival-rates of patients who received a prolonged course (4-6 months) of cyclophosphamide mouth immediately after extended local (100-200 mg daily) by mastectomy. These patients were seen consecutively in the same surgical practice (D.M.M.) in the period 1964-65. The 10-year survival of these patients has been compared with that of patients treated in the same practice between 1957 and 1963 who had either no chemotherapy or a single intravenous injection of cyclophosphamide or thiotepa at operation:
