Letter to the Editor

We would like to come back to our article recently published in Seminars in Arthritis and Rheumatism entitled “An algorithm recommendation for the management of knee osteoarthritis in Europe and internationally: A report from a task force of the European Society for Clinical and Economic Aspects of Osteoporosis and Osteoarthritis (ESCEO)” [1]. In this article, with respect to diacerein, we noted that the European Medicines Agency (EMA) recently informed that safety issues may outline a negative benefit/risk ratio and a reassessment was recommended. Since the publication of the article, the EMA has issued a statement as follows: “the Co-ordination Group for Mutual Recognition and Decentralised Procedures— Human (CMDh) endorsed recommendations to restrict the use of diacerein-containing medicines in order to manage the risks of severe diarrhoea and effects on the liver” [2]. The CMDh has endorsed these recommendations to ensure that diacerein’s benefits continue to outweigh its known risks.
