Preface

Linking transcription to physiology in lipidomics

The International Conference on the Bioscience of Lipids (ICBL) is a historical conference that has always been considered an international forum for the presentation and discussion of fundamental investigations in all aspects of lipid research and related fields. Since the first edition held in Brussels in 1953, over fifty editions have been organized and its renowned reputation has attracted more than 10,000 participants from all over the globe. The ICBL provides an international forum for the presentation and discussion of fundamental investigations in all aspects of lipid research and related fields. The ICBL usually attracts leading scientists from all continents and provides the opportunity to young investigators to present their work in lectures and posters and to meet with prominent scientists in the field. For over fifty years the ICBL took place in different countries, most of the time in Europe although in the past some editions of the conference were organized in the United States, Japan, Israel and Canada. In 2013 the 54th edition of ICBL was organized in Bari, an attractive city in Southeast Italy considered as the door to the East due to its geographically strategic location in the Mediterranean Sea. The conference lasted from September 17 through September 21 and about 200 scientists attended the conference. Over twenty leader scientists were invited to present cutting edge results on many aspects of lipid biosciences while thirty-five were selected from submitted abstract. Invited speakers were chosen based on their excellence and innovative research in lipid bioscience. The general theme of the conference was “Linking Transcription to Physiology in Lipidomics”. In the last decade the understanding of lipid biosciences witnessed a spectacular increase in the knowledge of new fundamental concepts in physiology and disease due to the discovery of nuclear receptors and signaling pathways regulating many aspects of lipid biosciences. This special issue highlights cutting edge results presented during the 54th ICBL by experts in many innovative fields of lipid biology.
